I don't know, like I said, if Dan and Justin were staying silent or condoning the behavior, I would feel differently but I think they've been vocal enough about how much they detest this segment of their fanbase. Even before the sauce debacle.
I was already on the fence about not watching the show anymore because of the fanbase becoming toxic but this basically sealed it. I love the show, it’s one of the most imaginative, funny shows I’ve seen in forever but I just can’t put up with that terrible fanbase anymore, it’s too much. Like at best, I’ll just keep it to myself that I like it from now on, I don’t want to be associated with that.
most super obsessive fandoms are terrible, it shouldn't influence how you yourself take in the show if it has nothing to do with the actual show itself like, look at all the shitty steven universe fandom problems in the last few years
People should not be abandoning a show they enjoy because of how other consumers choose to act. As has been said, there is nothing the writers nor the show itself does to encourage their behaviour whatsoever (with the creators openly & publicly condemning it) - Those toxic fans are 100% responsible for their own actions and should face 100% of any backlash or punishment. Choosing not to watch because of them only punishes the people who want nothing more than to create something that people like us enjoy, not for people who are going to harass members of their writing team for the fact they are female, or freak out at McDonalds employees over a damn novelty sauce. At the risk of becoming 100% cornball - it's our show & not theirs! Lol
This is bizarre to me, why would you let a fanbase effect you in any way at all? It's not your fault people suck, don't let it get to you
Not my intention to pile on btw! Just speaking in general because a lot more people than those ITT have expressed similar sentiments over the last few weeks and it's sad to me that fuckheads can damage the reputation of a genuinely great show.
Also not pushing back as fans of the show lets the scum dominate the conversation. That's how the show's fanbase gets its reputation cemented negatively. If the majority of fans, who aren't behaving this way, decide to clam up, then we let these idiots speak for us.
I totally get why people don't want to associate with the show anymore, honestly. I took a pretty huge step away from video games after the Gamergate shit went down, it all just left a bad taste in my mouth and I didn't want to be associated with that kind of video game fan. I had to actively distance myself from most online video game communities to be able to enjoy playing games again. (The general positivity of the video games thread here helped, too.) Seems pretty similar with the R&M situation, albeit on a less heinous level.
I mean yeah, I shouldn’t let those people stop me from watching it but at the same time, I don’t really want to support a show that’s produced such shitty and toxic behavior out of people. Those people sucked a lot of my enjoyment out of the show, they kinda ruined it tbh. Idk, I think I just need to take a break from anything related to the show and come back when I feel like things have died down.
If I recall right, didn’t the whole SU thing revolve around LGBTQAI fans saying heterosexual fans shouldn’t watch it?
The show can't control what behavior it elicits out of people. Like, it doesn't endorse this behavior, it doesn't endorse Rick's behavior either, and the creators have denounced these fans both before and after this all went down with the sauce. I mean, I'm not trying to tell you how to feel I just don't personally understand the logic of blaming/pulling support for the show for this, is all.
Have you ever had something ruined for you and you can’t enjoy it the same way you did before? Same thing here.
Yeah of course I have, but when the people making it have done something to deserve it. Like what happened with Moose Blood. This is different, idk.
If I gave a shit about fan bases, I wouldn't listen to 50% of the music I listen to. Can you imagine if I cared about Beyonce's fan base?
there was a case where fans harassed a writer because she tweeted some art about some characters getting together, another case involved fans attacking someone who was making fan art in different body proportions and it got so bad that she attempted suicide, there's more too https://io9.gizmodo.com/steven-universe-artist-quits-twitter-over-fan-harassmen-1785242762
I get both sides of the argument tbh, I won't be abandoning the show completely but definitely don't blame those who will. Whether or not the show intended to elicit this reaction from people, the fact is that it did. Whole thing bums me out so hard cause like the video posed earlier sorta pointed out, two or three years ago I would've been so pumped for a Pickle Rick episode. But this season I saw the ad for it and just sighed, already dreading the memes that would come of it. Hate feeling that way about a thing I otherwise would love.
I realized how popular this show has gotten after I started seeing people wear Rick and Morty snapbacks
I’m just struggling to put together how shitty fans can equal out to not enjoying the content. Can’t see how that math works out.
A bad fanbase can have some affect on enjoying something. The cult around the Big Lebowski is nauseating.
