I’m still thinking of this film five months after seeing it. It’s truly special. See this on the biggest screen you can.
Just now finding out about this thread. I ended up seeing this three times in theaters and was moved every single time by something different. I still think I prefer long days journey into night (its slowly turning into my favorite movie...ever, maybe?) but this is a special type of journey. It's so cool to watch Bi Gan's work get this recognition and praise. Speaking of which, for those who are familiar with Bi Gan's work, does anybody have any recommendations for films that scratch the itches as the dreamlike qualities?
Anyone who liked this should watch An Elephant Sitting Still. A different director named Hu Bo, who sadly committed suicide at 29 just before his debut film came out.
My heart breaks a little every time this gets brought up, one of the best films of this century and such a tragic loss. I really hope his novels get translations someday.
I finally got around to seeing this and thought it was wonderful. Incredibly creative and unique way of portraying cinema's ability to allow us to live many different lives vicariously through the art form, and connecting with others by seeing our inner self reflected in their work. I also think it does a great job at finding beauty in the finite nature of our existence. The prologue/epilogue in particular were stunning visually, and the long one take section was fantastic. I think that would be a strong final dream.
Nope, this was my first. I always wanted to check out Long Day’s Journey Into Night but just never got around to it.
fantastic film if you get the chance to watch it. looks like BFI has the UK streaming rights currently (kinda wild Criterion Channel isn't available in the UK)
