Never in a million years was I expecting something like that to happen lmao; I was dead silent going through those corridors just anticipating some standard jumpscare bullshit from that little doll thing, then when I saw 'it' I just jumped out of my fucking skin I have never been "got" like that by a horror game ever before
I could see them going in two directions next for the series. I think they'll do another RE Revelations, with Chris going to the BSAA HQ. This will probably be a more action-oriented game. RE9 will probably be with Rose, and I could see it playing with more supernatural elements given that she has some powers clearly. I'm super excited for the series future, regardless of how jarring the ending sequences were.
The section with the giant baby is probably the scariest part of any game I've ever played. They NAILED the atmosphere in that section and having the house be entirely safe up to that point only helped make the panic more intense.
I don’t remember if they give a reason for the game taking away your items at that point? But that definitely helps the tension in that section as well.
It kinda reminded me of the sequence in 7 when you have to make it through Lucas's birthday party puzzle room.
Completed it on Standard mode just now, would honestly give it a 9/10 as the overall gameplay more than makes up for the few flaws it has. Will likely drop to an 8 or 8.5 as time goes on but right now all I want to do is jump right back in!
I'm about 4-5 hours in (but really taking my time) but it's crazy how Bloodborne inspired this is. Some enemies/a character is straight out of that game, and the setting is basically Cainhurst Castle. I'm loving how ridiculous it is. Ethan's existence is just getting the absolute shit beat out of him
Replaying it now and holy shit the amount of foreshadowing. Like in Ethan's journal on his computer that's next to Rose's room he says "But...I still feel like a part of me is trapped in that hell hole back in Louisiana." I'm not sure how much of this is exclusive to NG+, but there's also a health form from Applefield Memorial Hospital about Rose that notes that "Results for additional fungal pathogen tests will be provided by BSAA." Which also helps confirm that any powers Rose has comes directly from the mold. This is kinda gross because that means Mia had sex with a big blob of mold. Ew. Edit: I also spotted the musical box that appears later as a puzzle Edit: gonna update this as I find more stuff. There's a book about the architecture of eastern European castles. Mia being a total asshole at the start also makes absolute sense. Little things like the Village of Shadows book, the native meal she cooks and her flawless pronunciation of the dish, everything. The way she looks more pissed than anything when shot and is able to withstand basically a full mag of bullets and still be alive to groan when Chris shoots her again.
Oh one thing I noticed near the end when the game jumps to Chris's section, the way they pan from the helicopters feels like a callback to an older game, but I can't put my finger on which one. Maybe I'm crazy idk.
sure, but the werewolf enemies are nearly identical in design to the beast enemies in Old Yarnham, as well as the giant dudes with the hammers. Also Heisenberg is rocking some hunter garb.
I mean the werewolves are just werewolves, giant dudes with hammers have been a trope forever, and Heisenberg is just your standard gothic mad scientist. It could have been an inspiration, but it could have been any other piece of gothic horror too. Comparing it only to Bloodborne is reductive to a centuries old genre/style.
I love the RE games but I couldn’t make it more than a half hour into RE7 before getting motion sick and had to lay down for like 20 min. Never happened to me in a game. Kind of a bummer as I really want to finish that and play this. I’d love a 3rd person view but know it likely wouldn’t work/be a lot of effort to do
Not foreshadowing but I also noticed two books on bookshelves that were interesting - one being written by George Trevor (another founding father of Umbrella, like Ozwell Spencer) and a weapons book written by Joseph Kendo, the gunshop owner in RE2
This happened to me before but with original Doom, horrible feeling. May be a futile suggestion but perhaps there are some settings on either the game or TV that may make things better? There is one effect on RE8 that i'd love to turn off; when you move Ethan the camera zooms in slightly, then will zoom back out when you stand still - that was noticeable at the start and made me feel slightly weird but I noticed it less and less as the game went on.
Something that has kinda irked me with the RE games in particular are the recurring sequences of being stalked by something super powerful that you cannot really deal damage to. It was fine in 7 with Jack because I feel like that was such a tiny part of the overall experience but they have recycled this model in both REmakes as well. Nemesis kinda makes sense cause that was part of his mo in the original game but now with Lady D doing it in the castle too, it has just kinda worn on me. Not only does it just get aggravating, it's silly that I can just always run back down to the duke/save room area and all of a sudden she cannot open a door. I've liked to imagine that all typewriter rooms are magical dimensions but it certainly seems to clash with other elements of these games. But then again Ethan reattached his hand with a bottle of health juice.
Didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I’m much more a fan of the first few games leaning into corporate science going awry but this is so Much goddamn fun. The variety in locations, returning to the village to unlock more areas, upgrading your weapons. Feels a lot like RE4 but with more horror. The late game area is creepy as hell too
I liked it in the castle because the threat was there, but pretty easy to escape. I like it MUCH more than the bits with Jack
Omg Mercenaries is actually really fun this time around. You can tell they put a lot of work into this.
It doesn't even help me most of the time because once I get frantic I'll rotate the wrong way or too fast and then fuck it all up haha
Just beat it Liked it overall. The Doll Part was my favorite, definitely felt like they were referencing P.T. there a lot (the silent hills demo). I wasn't thrilled with the end chunk of fighting Robo-infected, or the idea that the BSAA uses zombie soldiers. Feels pretty corny. I still can't fully wrap my head around Ethan being mold the whole time? It's also kind of a bummer because him constantly getting limbs cut off without consequence or explanation was so much funnier than him being dead/mold. It's also ridiculous how far they go to hide Ethan's face, it really made his final scene super awkward. Most first person games give me motion sickness and I kind of just toughed it out for this, but I don't think I'll be motivated enough to replay it. not sure I'd be interested in playing as Rose in the next one if she has mold powers. Definitely prefer when the lead is just a regular person up against insane odds.
