This looks so fucking sick, the cinematography looks incredible Also, similarly to Weapons, this trailer pretty much confirms that the script circulating online is 100% real so watch out for spoilers
I pre-read the Weapons script because I'm a huge baby when it comes to horror and honestly it made the experience in the theater so much more fun for me. I don't know if I'll do the same for this, though. I've only played RE4, so I feel like I kind of know what to expect.
I didn't read the script but I read a post from someone who did, and it's definitely a neat concept, kind of a "what if we followed some rando during the Raccoon City Incident" but if it ends like it says, I don't know how thrilled audiences will be by it. That said, the number of people upset because it's not strictly following in-game minutiae (like the fact that it's snowing) needs to touch grass.
Cregger goes into a lot more detail here. Basically says it's less of a zombie movie and more of a monster movie and that he was more interested in what the T-Virus does besides make zombies.
Can’t help but assume this is (potentially indirectly) pointed at me. I commented on the snow only because Cregger specifically mentioned that it takes place in the canon of the game, at the same time as RE2. I’m incredibly hyped for this and think he’s the right person for the job, i just think that comments like that are asking for the die hards to complain. I’m completely fine with it being its own thing with the RE name, if it feels like the vibe I know and love from the games, which all signs point to that being the case. I just felt like that comment painted him into an unnecessary corner. I don’t actually care about the snow (despite this long explanation).
I wasn't intending to call anyone out, it's just the most non-spoilery thing I could think of that people are whining about. Like, yes, it wasn't snowing in RE2, but it's also such a non-factor. It changes nothing about the overall concept, but then you have folks that literally only want a one-to-one adaptation of the game and think it'll make a million trillion bucks if they'd only do that.
I don't think a faithful adaptation would necessarily rake in money. But yes I do want an actual faithful adaptation of a game with a decent crew/director (which Zac is at least) working on it for once. You either get something like the original RE movies or you get something that is maybe decently made but was clearly a concept reworked to use a game's IP
Faithful adaptations can shoot themselves in the foot, especially when it's clearly designed for a particular medium. Fallout and Twisted Metal work for me as adaptations by taking two different approaches: one by being an original story taking place in the same universe and the other by taking concepts and lore, discarding the worst bits, and reimagining it into something better. Either practice frees you of the bonds a straight adaptation can confine you in. Clearly straight adaptations can work with the right material (The Last Of Us), but I think what Cregger is doing here is more interesting. Almost taking both of the above approaches, giving us a new story in the same universe and remixing some minor elements to, presumably, fit the story he's trying to tell.
A faithful adaption of a book is one thing because you're seeing the book come to life on the screen. You already have that in a video game.
The discourse on instagram is exhausting as is everyone is posting a review like they've seen the whole movie. It's like a minute and a half teaser... Everything that came before the movie still exists, and as far as I'm aware, this isn't rewriting or changing anything in the games that will come next. It's been known since it was first announced that it's an original story within the universe. Touched on by Penlab, but I mean people are already whining that that RE2 was in September and this is clearly a different month as it's snowing. Like... come on now. Knowing what this is trying to do with the 'it's a new story within the universe', the outrage and complaining is about as silly as it gets. EDIT - Didn't see where the snow discussion started here. Not trying to start or pick on anyone, I just saw it all over instagram on every place that has posted something about this.
Didn't know it was out there, but that's a lot of faith in the reading ability of some of the commentors.
I also don't get the complaints that it doesn't feel like Resident Evil, both from the perspective that Cregger is literally going out of his way to make the film feel like his experience with the games and also from the perspective that the series itself has hopscotched subgenres and tones several times over the years and sometimes within the same game.
So I thought I was going crazy by not seeing this thread on the first page and I guess if you block a thread's creator, the entire thread becomes invisible to you?
what does "it doesn't feel like resident evil" even mean. there are, what, 9 main line games and they almost all feel different from the last.
As far as doing direct adaptations of the games go, I don’t feel like I need that. The remakes over the past few years have been more than scratching that itch for me. I feel like at the very least, the vast majority of people (fans and non fans) are on board with this iteration.
