I don't know how to feel about this. We definitely need more Asians behind the camera. I did really like Whale Rider, though. At least it sounds like that terrible script with the random white dude was dropped, so there will be actual Asians in front of the camera. Baby steps, I guess?
questioning whether execs in charge of those projects are gonna try and make the same "non-white ppl don't draw mainstream audiences/box-office" typa arguments ala Ridley Scott with Gods of Egypt
I know it's a small thing since it's a voice cast. But I love that the 2 actors cast for this so far are black, what with it being set in Africa. Also really really glad that James Earl Jones is reprising his role from the original! Gives me hope for the Mulan and Aladdin adaptations.
No, it's not. I'm still mad about Kubo. After what Moana pulled off, does Kubo really have any excuse?
I completely missed the whole Kubo thing until now, just read the directors statement. Gross how he tries to deflect blame off himself and back on the people who are upset.
I remember being annoyed at the casting when I saw the trailers, but I had missed out on all actual discussion of it. Wow, that director's response was BAD. Lip-service to "diversity," mentioning extras? Check. Describing "colorblind" as a good thing? Check. It would've been so easy to cast appropriate people for those roles and still have a decent cast list for marketing purposes. And, it's not like the cast they had made Kubo any sort of big hit or whatever anyways! Sigh.
I'm honestly in shock that he thought "but we cast Tracy Jordan as a white British dude" was an actual thing he thought of as an excuse.
Oscars: Samuel L. Jackson cheers Denzel's performance, challenges Viola's category and offers many other strong opinions about this year's nominees Samuel L. Jackson is a gift of a performer. He doesn't sound anything like James Baldwin, but his performance in the documentary made Baldwin's words alive with moderninity, which, Baldwin's words were prescient anyway, but Jackson was acting as brilliantly as any performance this year. He's a real interesting guy and I don't think he's appreciated enough. He's killer in everything he does.
