Steve Harvey has always and will always be trash. He used to be on the Tyra show a lot and he's a fool
I just got to thinking, though--some of the older generation of Asian Americans aren't, um, woke? either. Yeah, we had Asian Americans standing alongside blacks during the civil rights movement, but my own parents, for example, weren't even in this country yet at that time. I've had to explain to them that the recent police brutality is systemic, and I'm still not sure if they get it, even after I bring up how POC have been disproportionately imprisoned compared to whites who commit the same crimes. My parents don't have the same outlook on race as my Asian American Studies professors of the same age range who've lived through Japanese internment. So maybe I shouldn't just expect solidarity across racial divides even among POC. But still, wtf Steve.
There's several factors that play into it. I assume your parents came her as adults like mine? If so they didn't grow up in this country like we did. They didn't experience growing up Asian American. Our parents believed "American" and all that it entails is synonymous with being white. To be American and have success in America is to agree to whiteness and all that it entails, including anti-blackness, etc. Even then, plenty of Asian Americans born here, raised her, aren't tapped into their own consciousness whether it be the colonization of the mind or the inability to see through the veil of a white come first society, and distinguish the way we see ourselves from the way others see us. There's also the idea that if we conform and agree to the racial status quo that we can ride the coat tails of whiteness. Basically, many Asian folks have no problem throwing brown and black people under the bus if it moves them up the food chain (not that difference from cis white women screwing it up for the rest of us.) Never mind that you'll never have your culture respected, but respected on a basis of measure that's white acceptance and orientalism.
This sounds and looks like a parody..... I'm not even sure what to say. The image looks awful and the description about it being centered around 9/11? What does MJ have to do with 9/11.....
who in the world would think Ashton Kutcher is worth that like, @Davjs it forreal looks like a fuckin sketch-show parody, holy shit.

Okay, that's cool and all, but I still don't understand what genre that's supposed to be, and I've watched, like, three different trailers now. Dark comedy drama thriller campy soap opera? In all seriousness, I noticed that Zoe Kravitz has less screen time in that trailer^ than the Asian actress who's not even listed at the end, and everyone else is white. But okay, I shouldn't be too picky; With-her-spoon achieved her goal of "employ[ing] women both in front of and behind the camera." I can call a win when I see it. Not everyone's fighting the same battles.

Little bit of hope for y'all. Back when this thread was first starting up I posted about giving talks on LGBT representation in anime. @lightning13 you'll recall this. I can't formally go into the details, but this year I'm pleased to say that at this upcoming Anime Boston, I will be working with Boston Pride on my next iteration of this presentation. Couldn't be more excited.
Nice work! I do remember going thru that and having a convo with you on here about it. When is it? Do feel free to let us know how that goes. I kinda miss going to conventions, but the last time I went to an anime one, I spent a lot on Sailor Moon merch hehe
