It’s kind of sad that they gloss over his time with Relient K since FANSD is so good. He must have been really hurt by how it ended.
I mean RK is not a Tooth and Nail band which is the point of the whole podcast, plus neither he nor the Matts have ever said anything about it, so I didn’t really expect any new insight there.
They did a decent amount focusing on him working for KoL and Cold War Kids, I figured they might give a little more shine to RK.
No one in this band has every really done a personal/in depth interview, which is almost frustrating in some ways lol. They are very reserved, I feel like.
Their concept with all the different album covers and snake was cool. I remember I disliked Overthinking so much at first, but now I love it haha.
Ha, we're probably a similar age. I must have been 12 or 13. I basically jumped from mainstream pop/hiphop music straight to this. Quite a big jump but I'm thankful for it as it's shaped the last 15 years of my life.
I got heavy into Relient K with Anatomy, Two Lefts was the first album I was hotly anticipating leading up to it. It was the perfect follow-up. Seen them live 5-6 times since and man, it's a great show every time.
I remember waiting for The Anatomy and Two Lefts to come in the mail and rushing home from school to listen. I'd listen to their albums for hours on end. I think I've seen them 10+ times, really enjoyed seeing them with Switchfoot on their last tour
From End To End has got to be he most underrated Relient K song. Also I'm pretty sure I Am Understood? was the first song I heard with "screams". Hardcore for me at the time haha
I can honestly say that I have listened to and loved Relient K to the degree that I have longer than any other artist who still makes music. Since I was in elementary school to now. I turn 27 on Saturday. Kind of crazy.
Quite a fun story actually. I was on holiday with my family in Cornwall which is a region right at the bottom of the UK in the south west. (Love going there - it's one of my favourite places). Anyway, one rainy day we went to this place called Porthleven which is a small town with a harbour. There was a Christian bookshop there so as it was raining and my parents lead a church, we naturally stopped by. We got talking to the person that was working there and he talked to me and my siblings. At the end he said "I've got these free sampler CDs I'm going to give to each one of you." He looked at us and gave us each one. The one he happened to give me was a Gottee records sampler - it was mainly hip hop and acoustic or stripped down stuff and I thought it was really cool but there was also a really brilliant song... Softer To Me by Relient K. Fast forward a few months and my family were away again at a Christian festival/conference called New Wine. I'd been really getting into music over the last few months thanks to that sampler and I decided I was going to use my pocket money to buy a CD - I only had money for one. As I was browsing I found several of the artists on that sampler. People like the GRITS, John Reuben and the like. And I also found Two Lefts by Relient K. I ended up agonising over a few days. As I said, I could only buy one... which one would it be? In the end I chose Relient K... and the rest is history!! Haha. But seriously, I may have ended up a totally different person if I had chosen a hiphop one. As it is, Relient K opened up the door to other Christian bands and I was soon listening to mewithoutYou, Underoath, Dead Poetic, Emery, Beloved and a whole host of Tooth & Nail/Solid State bands. So that's the story. I'm very thankful as music has shaped my life in the biggest way. Two fantastic songs right there. I've always really enjoyed From End To End.
Awesome! Glad you picked the right CD in the end haha. Softer To Me is such an amazing track too, best on S/T I think.
