Same. Pretty much did a discography re-visit unintentionally while I cleaned my apartment over the weekend and this band has some of the best pop-punk production to come out of the era they were in. Also, The Nashville Tennis EP fuckin' slays.
Just stumbled into Candy Hearts. What do y'al think about this? I love this track so much Time to put these guys on repeat again
I finally got around to listening to the podcast with Hoopes giving the oral history of the band and man did it disappoint. Felt so surface level and I felt like I really didn't learn anything new or interesting from it. Skipped over the gritty stuff, like band member changes, I felt. On another note - jammed out to Air For Free all weekend. Think it is climbing quite high on my ranking now.
I thought it was a good interview but it wasn't an oral history. It didn't just skip over the gritty stuff, it skipped over entire eras/albums. To me an oral history would have started with the founding of the band, how they got signed, gone through each album, lineup changes, etc. I enjoyed it as an interview but to label it an "oral history" of the band is a tad inaccurate, lol.
I mean, I agree 100%. Yet the title of the episode was "Relient K: An Oral History w/ Matthew Hoopes" so I went in with those expectations. Good interview just went in expecting some depth to their history. As a longtime fan, I was hoping to hear the gritty they often gloss over.
I feel like that about just about every longform interview with them. I feel like they’re always willing to talk about stuff like band members leaving, FANSD and even Katy Perry, but the interviewers never go there. That said, I still enjoyed this. Mostly his thoughts on FANSD, CL and AFF.
Yeah, it's funny because...I got the impression with CL it was a Matt T. thing that he went along with and looks back as a.....experiment *cough*mistake*cough*...
They've discussed member changes in a lot of scattered places over the years...you just have to piece them together. For the most part, it appears there hasn't been much drama with those changes--members leave and take other jobs presumably because they need steady income and RK wasn't consistent for a number of years. The only drama with member changes seems to have been with Ethan...reading between the lines it seems there was tension with the direction they took on CL, likely the lack of consistent touring around that time, and possibly with the structure of how the band operates--legally, it's only the Matts who technically are Relient K. I can't imagine every member of the band that has come and gone was okay with that arrangement--particularly anyone who wanted to be seen/valued on equal footing. Just my thoughts. It's all speculation--and I agree, it'd be nice to see an interviewer actually ask about some of these topics that are often avoided.
It’s trash and it somehow gets worse with age. Band is my fav of all time but I can’t be anything but harsh when it comes to Collapsible Lung. In my opinion, even the title track and Don’t Blink would be mid to bottom tier on their other albums.
Looks like he’s going with Matthew Thiessen and the Earthquakes as the solo project’s name. That’s cool!
