Oh, also, yeah I saw some people like PTL must be Praise the Lord. They talked like it was the band returning to writing really religious songs after they kind of left it for awhile.
I know. hahaha Then PTL leaked and there were people like "Relient k has totally abandoned God". Relient k got some of the weirder religious fans I think.
I don't think they've actively distanced themselves from that scene. The clip of God on Amazon from the new album says "let Your kingdom come, I believe in God"
I think they distanced themselves post-mmhmm. Five Score has Deathbed, but even that doesn't feel overtly religious due to subject matter and the inherit relevance religion has to death. And the rest of the songs that could be religious, are vague enough not to be. FANSD and Collapsible Lung kept that trend pretty well with the clearest religious reference being "And I hope haven’t heard the last words from the holy ghost" which isn't really much still. "God" might change that trend, but I think they distanced themselves a bit for at least a period of time.
Literally made a reddit to respond to this thread. It gets annoying that majority of the people on there can't just accept it's bad and move on
Reddit I've found is just full of people who can't accept a band releasing something bad. The Say Anything subreddit is maybe even worse in trying to justify just how bad "I Don't Think It Is" is. And that album is worse than Collapsible Lung.
Generally, I don't care. I usually just get annoyed when it's like every post is reaching for a reason for something to be good. Like, I don't like Coheed & Cambria's Good Apollo I, but people talk about loving that album and they make sense when they do. Where as CL and IDTII, it's more like "it's not immoral because _____" and "Princess doesn't have bad lyrics because it's just Max being Max". I don't know. I think it's usually pretty obvious when someone really loves something, and when they kind of had to make themselves like it because it's their favorite band. Like, I made myself like CL when it came out and if you could read my posts on AP from that I think it'd be pretty obvious that I did force myself to like it. At the same time though, my posts on this subject might be a little harsh or dramatic and I don't really mean them to be, and at the end of the day, I'm glad that there are people who enjoy CL and IDTII.
Yeah, I agree with that. It's usually obvious when people are trying to justify an album that's generally panned being "not that bad". Especially true of CL, where half the discourse around that album is "well, if you think about it THIS way..." and it's always just such a reach. I'd say it's less a matter of accepting that a band released a bad album -- SpyKi and Slangster pointed out why that doesn't necessarily work. It's more about being able to admit you don't like an album from a band you do like. Semantics, but still.
PTL is really an abbreviation for Praise the Lord that I've heard Christian folks use. Anyway, the music isn't good on Collapsable Lung, but after listening to it the other day, I really think it was the lyrics that did the album in for me. They feel out of character. Which is weird since I don't know Matt personally. But it just didn't feel genuine to me. Even if you view the album as some weird concept album, it still doesn't work because the "concept" isn't explicit enough to actually come through track by track.
Seeing as CD still isn't a thing, I'm probably gonna go ahead and check out the leak. I don't plan on paying for this in any other format. haha
