Yeah, I actually didn't really appreciate Five Score until the last few years. I remember really not caring for it when it first came out. I still don't think it's that good of an album, but it's consistent at least (except for Give, which is terrible) and there's Deathbed which is amazing. And now for mine: S/T - Softer to Me Anatomy - Failure to Excommunicate Two Lefts: Jefferson Aero Plane MMHMM: Which to Bury/Let it All Out Five Score: Deathbed Forget: Savannah/Baby CL: CL
It sounds like a song that would be on self-titled or Anatomy or even a WOW worship cd. It's just over the top preachy and cheesy.
Musically I think it's fantastic, and lyrically I just pretend he's talking about a relationship, like I do with most of their religious sons in the first place.
Trust me, my general opinions on RK, aren't the majority haha ;) But CL is my least favorite full length by far.
likewise, I don't think it sounds anything like those other albums musically and it never felt preachy to me, just loving.
I'm a Christian so I see the spiritual/biblical side of songs very quickly, and almost always prefer the spiritual interpretation cause I find it more edifying, but I actually think of Give in the context of another person more often than Christ. Don't know why. It just does a good job summing up what I want to be to those I love.
I think one of the things that makes Relient k so great as a Christian band is they can do a good job about writing songs like Give. While Give is almost for sure a heavy religious song, it can also be interpreted as just a song about just making sure you are just giving it all to a person as well. It can make it appeal to more than just a Christian
It's weird that Give is "controversial" to this site. Like, it's less blatantly religious than Be My Escape, I So Hate Consequences, Let It All Out and When I Go Down from Mmhmm. And I've never seen anyone say anything about those. Is Give so hated just because it's from a less liked album, or?
I think you are right and it's because it's on Five Score. Bet if it was on Mmhmm or Forget and Not Slow Down it wouldn't have been brought up
I feel like people would hate it more if it was on FANSD honestly, it would stick out so much since that album is like a tragic break-up. haha The one song that is positive about a relationship still feels super bitter-sweet in the context, but Give is just like the happiest little song and would essentially stall the experience of the album. Though, I could see it on Mmhmm and being looked over for that fact alone.
I bet too if you would have put some of the Mmhmm Christian songs on Five Score then we would have the same issue that people have with Give
I just always found the lyrics generic and boring. The reason people don't have a problem with it (it could be a relationship or about God) is why I dislike it. It's so throwaway. It reminds me of the South Park joke, take love songs and put Jesus in there. I've always felt it was too traditional.
Yeah, I get that for sure. Haha I just don't get the people who hate the song based around the religious aspects of it, but also swear on Mmhmm. I like Give, but it would be lower tier on Five Score for me still.
^ It's just a bad song. I don't care that it's religious, really. Those songs mentioned above are all fine. Therapy is a good song, it's pretty religious, I like it a lot. mewithoutYou is my favorite band. But Give is just beating you over the top of the head, lazy, boring songwriting.
