Decided to listen to this today on a sunny morning and it holds up really well. So fun and catchy and textured and eclectic.
Random plug for something Relient K-adjacent but Matt Hoopes' store has a couple of 1981 Inventions hoodies that are amazing quality...I bought the first 1981 Inventions hoodie back in 2018-ish? And it's held up so well. So I decided to buy one of each of the new ones and was stoked to find they are thick and high-quality. Also, I needed to exchange for a size up and Hoopes himself replied to the customer service e-mail quickly to help. Feels good to get a solid product and support him/his family. Never know, it might help support new music as well. 1981 INVENTIONS
Love love love that record. Sonically it has a great sound. So glad it was pressed to vinyl. It’ll always rank very low for RK fans but it was THE record that got me into them and it still brings me joy to hear it.
Same feelings about it for sure, although Softer to Me is still a great song. That was the gateway album that opened the floodgates into this whole scene and for that I'm forever grateful. I think I learned to play that whole album on guitar too Now I have all the feels remember buying this and popping it in to our van's cd player and hearing that bass line come in on Hello McFly. I was 14 and that was 26 years ago?! Now my son is 7 and halfway to 14. Time does not make sense. Thanks for the therapy session @Jason Tate
I still remember going into my local Christian bookstore to buy the album but they wouldn't carry it because "there's a song about Marilyn Manson".
The old lady who did their inventory saw the title, did no further research, and said nope! Years later I got into a fight with her about Rob Bell when she refused to stock any of his books, even before the whole Love Wins controversy.
I remember how much I hated Rob Bell at my most conservative evangelical. Now I think he might’ve been on to something. But I’ve also been considering what I would even call myself now. If Christian, universalist. If agnostic, red letter follower. If atheist, humanist/absurdist. I’m just so discombobulated by it all that I haven’t felt confident in a label. All of this to say, Relient K still slaps. The freakout from my coworkers (pastoral staff at a church) when they toured with Semler. RELIENT K HAS GONE WOKE.
What year is it? This sentiment feels like 2006 to me. Hardly anyone knows Relient K is even an slightly active band these days, let alone enough to care about who they tour with haha Also, my Relient Gay shirt is still the best. Wish they’d make a hoodie out of it.
Hoopes restocked the 'mmhmm' guitar pedal that's signed by him and Thiessen, in case there were still folks looking for one. Love the look of it: MMHMM 20th Anniversary
