Deck The Halls, Bruise Your Hand is still available on vinyl and won't be repressed: Relient K - Deck the Halls, Bruise Your Hand (20th Anniversary Limited Edition)
Wild that it was basically a b-side/unfinished song from mmhmm. And according to Matt, some of it was about Katy Perry.
Ha! That’s a cool coincidence - I’m writing a sermon for tomorrow and using those lyrics in part of it
For the longest time I thought the line “like it’s a life or death affair” sounded like “like kissing leopards at the fair” and I’ll never unhear it.
Fun story- I reached out to Hoopes this morning to ask him who played bass on the song Apathetic Way to Be, since three of the ‘mmhmm’ songs were recorded with a studio bass player after Brian left before the album was finished being recorded- those songs are The One I’m Waiting For, My Girl’s Ex-Boyfriend, and Which To Bury? - a cool fact that isn’t noted in the liner notes for mmhmm, and confirmed by Hoopes to me. Anyway, Hoopes got back to me super fast and said he messaged Brian about this question (they still talk, so cool!) and they both are pretty sure Brian played bass on the song…something that isn’t noted in liner notes anywhere. Nerdy story, I know. But wanted to share.
Savannah was playing in Starbucks over here in Sheffield (UK) this morning and I got too excited. Never heard them in any public place here. Me to my three year old: “this is Relient K! This is Relient K!”
Yeah my unproven theory is the three songs recorded after Brian left were a burst of a creativity Thiessen had after him and Katy broke up. It seems they might’ve actually been finished recording the album, then Brian left, then three more songs were recorded. Saying “Brian left partway thru recording mmhmm” could’ve technically been correct but not entirely accurate to the situation…if my theory holds water. But I don’t know for sure.
So over in the Jimmy Eat World thread there's been a discussion of their top 4 Mt. Rushmore songs. With no new music/tour/news this will have to do for now. There was also a ranking of favorite title tracks but RK doesn't really do that for most albums so maybe we'll have to do something like favorite B-sides or cover rankings. This is almost impossible, a top 10 might be better with so many honorable mentions for the last spot: Softer To Me (especially the acoustic version), Empty House, I Celebrate the Day, When I Go Down, The Stenographer I So Hate Consequences Therapy Bite My Tongue Chap Stick, Chapped Lips, and Things Like Chemistry
sahara i so hate consequences over thinking collapsible lung *edit this is so hard and could change in the next 10 minutes
I was going to post this yesterday but needed to make a playlist first to narrow it down. I So Hate Consequences was the only lock that came to mind initially
I know its the cliche answer, but, to me, Be My Escape is a 10/10 perfect song that absolutely has to be on something like this. I would also have to include "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" but, to be more fun and have them all be from different records, here's my Mount Rushmore: Be My Escape Forget and Not Slow Down Don't Blink Empty House The irony here being that Collapsible Lung is easily my least favorite RK album, followed by Air For Free, but man, those songs are just too damn good. My honorable mentions are, in no particular order, *takes deep breath* Who I Am Hates Who I've Been Deathbed Sahara I Need You The One I'm Waiting For I So Hate Consequences Which to Bury, Us or the Hatchet? Devastation and Reform The Scene and Herd Come Right Out and Say It Where Do I Go From Here? Curl Up and Die High of 75 Let It All Out The Truth
There are so many off of Mmhmm or FANSD that would have made it, I forced myself to just pick one from each album. I could write paragraphs on each of the songs lol I So Hate Consequences has been my favorite song of theirs since it came out, it has all their classic elements: It's catchy and upbeat, has clever word play, and has that beautiful piano interlude. Bite My Tongue has my favorite Theissen wordplay: I'm sweeping up the seconds that tick off the clock and saving them for later when I'm too ticked to talk Therapy is my go to on FANSD, the line that sticks out: Let's call it what it is not what we were And Chap Stick is just so much dang fun
