Relient K Band • Page 140

    I do not exist.

A band like Relient K have enough internet hype and prestige to put out an album (or even EP) once every 5 years and make enough income (particularly if it’s the Matt’s doing the bulk of the work) without needing the effort of touring and avoid the limelight and attention of having huge fans such as the likes of us who spend hours posting on forums.

I equally understand wanting to stay at home, but in this age I think there are opportunities that other bands have taken that we never would have dreamed of 25 years ago.

My 3 year old son is obsessed with Relient K. He only wants to listen to MMHMM. If we try to play other bands, he says "This isn't real music. Let's play Relient K". If a kid is going to have a favourite band to listen to, Relient K is a pretty awesome choice. I really hope they end up putting out another album. If they never toured again and just made albums every 5 years, that would be fine by me... I get if Matt (s) have moved on, but the fanbase is beyond strong enough to be profitable and make it worthwhile doing.

Due to all the recent Five Score talk I gave it a listen tonight. I love how Deathbed resolves with the same melody as the opening acapella track.
Also...The Stenographer (from Bird and the B-sides) follows a very similar sonic pattern...it has to be a scrapped song from Five Score right? Even thematically it fits with Plead the Fifth. But I've never been able to find confirmation online.

In that MLT interview, he says Theissen’s laptop was stolen back in the early 2000s. Which is wild to me because he lost another laptop with a ton of songs on it in a bus fire in 2008-ish. So many lost potential RK songs..

I’m glad that we got Air For Free, more than anything. It’s in my rotation pretty heavily still and I have such great memories associated with the time that it came out.

It’s been 8 years today since Relient K released new music. Truly Madly Deeply EP.

Man ... Candy Hearts had such a great sound to it. If they ever came back and made an album with that type of energy, that would be unreal.

I've been listening to so much RK recently, must have been sparked by all the discussion over the past month or so.

It is amazing to look back at how much music they were putting out. An album and EP every 1-1.5 years, I didn't realize at the time how spoiled we were. Those EPs are amazing, their B-sides are album worthy. Wit's All Been Done, For the Band, and Nothing Without You are so good. Not to mention The Stenographer, which I will defend as one of their best songs.

I really dug into Forget and Not Slow Down and I think I've finally come around on it being my favorite album over Mmhmm. I liked it at the time but it just didn't hit me as hard. But now I can fully appreciate it and I think it is a perfect album. They locked in every aspect of their sound. I'm getting nerdy but Therapy might have one of my favorite moments on the later choruses when Matt sings "Call it what it is" and then it sounds like Ethan Luck/somebody else in the background singing "Not what it was." I never fully noticed/appreciated that before but it is so good and stuck out.

Also, burying the lede here but Hoopes recently sold one of Matt T's guitars from The Two Lefts era and mentioned he is "really looking forward to doing some shows (this year even)." That sounds more like one off shows instead of a tour but any live shows from RK is a great thing at this point.

Sorry for the long essay, the TLDR version is Relient K is great and they might being playing some shows this year

Matt's always had a great sense of melody but some of the stuff on Forget and Not Slow Down is just so fucking good.

In the last 2 or so years I've realized I am sort of never in the mood for Forget and Not Slow Down oddly. If I want Relient K, I reach for Two Lefts or Mmhmm mostly. The others get sprinkled in for sure, but those two are the two I find myself really really itching to listen to often. Air For Free is probably my next most played album.

FANSD is my favorite by far, but it’s hard to seek out/lock in with unless you’re in a moody place IMO lol.

The other records have such range in maturity, fun, and intensity that make them easier to pick up and run with.

Air for Free strikes a balance between pensive and manageable without being moody to me, but also some light songs for like yogurt ads that are totally fine too
