Friends, put the shiny shininess of singles aside. The only survivor is simply better (that’s a vote). Would this be the first deep cut/non obvious fan favorite to win a bracket?
Haha love the pun! There is no shininess of this being a single my dude! The song just simply ruullesss. Until Rapture, does this band's singles even count really as singles? I would think all of them before Rapture are waaaayyy to heavy to be played on the radio or promoted, so are they singles only because they have music videos?
Although I think 6 songs on DTGL are better than In Regards To Myself, my vote still goes to that song. The Only Survivor is still a great track, just a tiny bit behind In Regards. So: In Regards To Myself Thanks for doing this bracket, @bachna84. Been a lot of fun.
According to Wikipedia there were only two singles. The first was Desperate Times, Desperate Measures. The second was Too Bright To See, Too Loud To Hear. My memory is hazy though.
Very strong final 2. Gonna go with... The Only Survivor Was Miraculously Unharmed Thanks so much for doing this @bachna84 ! It was a lot of fun!
I'm pleasantly surprised that it's so close! I was kind of expecting In Regards to win in a landslide.
I go back and forth on it and it’s something I think too much about lol. While it has grown on me a lot, I used to straight up not like in regards. Didn’t like the riff, it wasn’t catchy, etc etc, so whenever they’d play it live (or whenever any band plays any hit song I don’t like) I’d ask myself “why does the band think people like this song, they choose the singles whether we like it or not.” And then I learned people actually really like it lol and then I started to like it. Point is, singles, at least imo, are almost never the best songs on a record, and I’d imagine that’s an opinion shared by most people on this site since we’re more likely to be full album listeners, so when singles do really well it weirds me out lol
It was definitely a pre album hype song so that’s pribably why I consider it a single it just didn’t have a video
If any other song had made it, including Writing On The Walls, I would've voted for The Only Survivor. It's an excellent song. I know I love IRTM more than that song and it's my favorite off Define.
@bachna84 appreciate you running this bracket. One of my favorites, had a blast revisiting Underoath's discography.
Ahhh! It’s funny because now everything that gets released before an album is usually considered a “single”. Back then it was quite different. My memory also suffers as I would only ever listen to the first song released of a band I knew I would enjoy (so in this case it was Desperate Times) and then wait for the whole album to come out.
