Still blows my mind that we've had a good run of new music from these guys. Really digging the new song. I do miss the more experimental side that they had going on ASOPTC though.
It's fine but unmemorable. Like the rest of their recent material, I can't get past how flat the production sounds. I feel bad for David with how buried in the mix his drums are.
David has himself to blame for the mix of the drums as he and Kristoffer were the producers of both War Music and the new EP.
I'll defend both of their most recent albums, but this EP is...... trash. The production is absolutly horrid and it really affects the ability to enjoy the songs.
I listened to Freedom today, and it really is a solid album. I like how experimental they got with some of the stuff on there. War Music was really missing that.
Very much agree, Freedom is quite underrated because there were such high expectations when they came back
I know I’ve said it before but I still miss the experimental side Jon Brännström brought to the band. Sucks he got kicked out before they could do a comeback album.
I had no idea what that song was until I dug deeper, but apparently Refused have 6 songs for this video game already? I had no idea til right now

The stripes never go out, it's a statement that fits very well with Backengrillen, this unlikely new ensemble, where everyone has roots in Umeå's wonderfully diverse music life. Four strong voices with local, national and international fame from bands like Refused, TEXT, INVSN, Fire! Orchestra, The International Noise Conspiracy, The End, Serpent, Final Exit and other classic jazz combos. The stripes then? Well, to uncompromisingly assert one's individuality and energetic expression, to never hide behind polished facades but get straight to the point. The band's premiere delivers hard noise improv with one leg in Umeå's classic HC tradition and the other in the inspiration of the moment and the surprising power of jazz. And the band adds: also anti-racist and anti-fascist death jazz! Mats Gustafsson saxs, flute, electronics, etc., Dennis Lyxzén vocals, etc., Magnus Flagge electric bass, etc., David Sandström drums, etc. Dropbox - Backengrillen - Simplify your life
That sounds cool based on the sample track but will probably not appeal to most Refused fans. I still have not given War Music a shake but I have to say a few songs from Freedom are mainstays in my running playlists. I think people were way too harsh on that album partially because it was so, so not More New Shapes Of Coming Punk or whatever.
I played freedom once a day for months. It’s a great album in its own right, although I do think war music is better
I saw Backengrillen live yesterday. Most of the songs sounded much like the later Refused with sax instead of guitar Dropbox - Backengrillen.mp4 - Simplify your life
