i mean, i get your point, but so does coldplay. having cohesion as a group doesn’t necessarily mean you’re so talented that people can’t doubt the talent on an online forum haha
flea is incredibly talented. frusciante can make some very cool tones and fill out the song when he wants to, but everything i’ve heard from this seems like a RC Cola version of what he’s done in the past. i’m not crazy about chad but don’t want to open that up again. few vocalists that are less “talented” than kiedis
kiedis makes everything he touches way more dumb but i don’t care about that anymore, dumb things can be fun, and even though he is not a good singer in any way i’ve lived with his voice so long that i also never really register its awfulness. honestly arguably his horrible strained singing is part of what makes “breaking the girl” sound so desperate and great interplay of this band is still special to me and not really comparable to like. coldplay. the telepathy with which their music turns on basically every record (doesn’t matter which guitarist) is what made going through their discography really rewarding. it’s not about how well each member plays (even tho flea is obv crazy) but how well they fit into each other. rock bands that have that sense of groove are actually very rare etc. to everyone else itt watching me do this, sorry to expend any energy defending incredibly problematic band the red hot chili willies on chorus dot fm
one hot minute is okay by their standards. navarro rules. if nothing else, smith never makes me think “huh this sucks,” which is better than a lot of drummers. it’s just kinda wallpaper that’s there.
my admittedly insane ranking: (theoretical 45ish-minute version of i'm with you with tracks from i'm beside you spliced in) one hot minute blood sugar sex magik by the way the uplift mofo party plan mother's milk i'm with you freaky styley stadium arcadium californication unlimited love the getaway red hot chili peppers
Going to need that theoretical I’m With You track list (as well as a dissertation about how that album is their overlooked masterpiece).
i think i have a better argument for one hot minute as an overlooked masterpiece, the i'm with you material just hits my pop-rock sensibilities directly i'm workin' on that combined i'm with/beside you though
I'm With You came out during my most Chili Peppers vulnerable years and I quite like 5-6 tracks from it. I also think The Getaway is underrated and possibly the only album of theirs I wouldn't immediately skip a song from anymore
the danger mouse production sinks the getaway for me. that and i find the elton appearance/interpolation unbearable lol. second half of that album is still really good
I'm With You is miles better than The Getaway, but I don't get the love for the I'm With You B-Sides........they are pretty meh for the most part. I find the pre-Mothers Milk albums to be almost entirely unlistenable.
