The first and only time I ever saw RHCP was on the Stadium Arcadium album cycle when they played in my hometown's football stadium in the UK and honestly they were on fire that night, they played all the hits and straight bangers and didn't do any long ass jam sessions onstage!! Yet a year later one of my mates who went to the same stadium show I went to saw them at a festival and he said they were fucking shit, kept doing extended jam sessions on stage and basically fucking around!
When we saw them last year at Fenway, it was definitely not the same type of show as before. But it was fun, just tough to hear with the acoustics of Fenway vs the Ice Rink we saw them...
agreed…and that’s not to say John isn’t a great guitar player/song writer either…more that Josh filled in seamlessly
both of these albums from last year are 1000x better than anything josh did with them. josh’s solo records are also much much better.
Just to follow up on my own post but Foo Fighters are still an incredible live act…top 5 maybe top 3 going…nearly three hour set at CitiField just awesome from start to finish
I mean, you’re right about SA… but I’d run it like this: Stadium Arcadium I’m With You Unlimited Love The Getaway Return Of The Dream Canteen (this album is truly awful)
Im just saying if you blindly listened to the last 4 releases could you really tell which 2 John played on vs Josh? Probably not
Yeah. Not just the playing style, but the overall tone and setup is way different. Nobody gives John enough credit for what he brings as a backup vocalist as well.
There is absolutely nothing interesting about I’m With You. I’d argue it’s easily their most forgettable album.
john hadn't, until the records from last year, played with the amount of reverb and delay that josh had all over his albums except, like, throw away your television
The Getaway feels pretty firmly like a “1 of 1” in their catalog for me. A bunch of songs on there don’t sound anything like typical Chili Peppers. I’m With You is less distinct (and less good).
I’m With You felt extremely polished, concise, but kinda lacked improvisation and depth. It’s hard for me to describe. I liked a decent amount of songs on there, but the album as a whole felt so safe. I enjoyed how it was Flea driven and some songs like Look Around and Raindance Maggie had a night club feel to them or something. They kinda let Josh come out of his shell a little bit on the Getaway and I really felt like the album was too all over the place.
You guys have heard I'm Beside You right? The b-sides from I'm With You? When put together as a compilation it's easily the best Josh album
I think you can find a good half hour of a solid album in I'm With You. The Getaway has stuck with me for a while. Might have just been listening to it a ton on a beach vacation so I get good vibes from it. Don't think I ever completed Dream Canteen but had a lot of fun at their MetLife show in '22.
