I mean, much of my quest to the edge of virginity was charted through the uncertain waters of MySpace messages. Certainly felt like carrier pigeons. The courting, not the sex.

The birth of my anxiety. Fucking sending that invite to come over in that narrow window when no one would be home, at like 1 am, refreshing over and over on passable internet, drowning the stress in Panic! at the Disco.

This is such a vivid scene. I was gonna say I had a similar experience on AIM but that would be a lot faster than Myspace. That first panic album, while I haven't heard it in years, I'm positive would still bang nostalgically if I put it on

AIM was definitely a part of my teen years as well but lesser so, for reasons I'm not sure of. Feels like I talked to my friends on there and girls on MySpace. I think the MySpace bulletin eventually became the new away message.

I used AIM to talk to friends and strangers, Myspace def had that more intense social vibe to me growing up. Used to watch my cousins on Myspace and they def would be refreshing their messages A LOT. The away message is classic and timeless tho and I think it lasted longer imo (at least I used AIM longer than Myspace)

I was much more active on AIM than Myspace. Man, the nights of crafting the perfect AIM profile in some Gothic font with a black background and red text listening to The Swiss Army Romance or Places You Have Come to Fear The Most.

Passive-agressive dating with AIM away messages was great.

Especially when you didn't even go away, lol. Put up the message, sit there and wait for a response, all the while thinking "I am very cool and smart and not at all pathetic rn"

I was very inept during the AIM days but it was exciting to get a crush's SN

Not to mention buddie icons and lyrics in away messages and text formatting and all that

Away messages were great. I felt like a pro hacker when I figured out how to have my away message/profile say what I was listening to in Winamp.

Blows my mind that it was more common to ask for someone's screen name than their phone number when I was 14.

Drunkenly asking for a girls snapchat is how I met the girl I am currently dating. I had never done that before but it worked I guess.

There was a charm to MySpace/AIM that won't ever be replicated because it was appointment communication by and large. You had to sit your ass down at the computer, and in this case of AIM, had to be online simultaneously. I would never let a MySpace convo with a girl die because I waited all school day for that fucking thing. Nowadays if a text convo with a girl gets dull, I let it be for a couple of days and come back when I have something poignant to say lol

I try to avoid texting (except for making plans) unless I have been seeing the person for awhile. Its hard to build any sort of relationship Q&A style through text.

A lot of people were always on, when you're in high school what else is there to do weeknights, and texting I guess was expensive at the time? Remember being told by certain people not to send them texts because their parents would get mad lol
I'm a constant texter, I like to riff
