You guys are talking about tax refunds, not returns. It's a refund because you paid more than you were supposed to throughout the year, so you're getting the money you earned, back.

I actually got more in tax returns before I was married. My wife is considered a business owner, so she typically ends up owing money. Ultimately, it just ends up just bringing down what I typically used to get back.

Yeah, getting married screwed me over on my refund. I used to get ~$1000 back and after I got married we owed like $3000. Almost got divorced immediately after that

 

also they returned my money, therefore I call it a tax return.

In what instances would you have to pay instead of getting a return???

I know I have to pay but that’s because I was a 1099 employee who didn’t have taxes taken out to begin with.
Outside of that or owning your own business I’m genuinely confused

Keep in mind I have p much zero tax knowledge. Clearly.

 

if your income is not taxed enough throughout the year based on your tax bracket and dependents and deductions you have to pay, if your income is taxed too much throughout the year you get a refund.
