I really dig the new album. I know everything they have done since pales in comparison to their debut full-length, The Rhumb Line but I think Need Your Light is a good effort. I saw them live a couple of weeks ago and they were great. As usual their songs sound better live than recorded. It was a great show. Definitely check out their tour if you have the chance.
The Orchard is top 10 all time for me. I also love The Rhumb Line. Big thumbs down on the direction they went after those albums, for me. This Time Of Year is the definition of "Commercial" indie to me. I fully expect to hear that song in a Target commercial with attractive people in bright dress dancing on shopping carts and shit
I am genuinely shocked people like Need Your Light so much. Other than Suckers, that album did nothing for me. Ya'll who like Need Your Light, how do you feel about This Time of Year?
I'd take "Water" over nearly any song of theirs. I wasn't huge on it at first, but I've come around to it a lot.
I'm super casual with this band, I love a song or two off every album and then carry on. "Boy" was great. "Angel Please" was great. "Absolutely" was great. I probably couldn't name more than 5 songs of theirs. New one is just alright.
Newest song is probably the first I've actually liked in a long time from them, but this band seriously needs to bring back the cello. I would kill for another album in line with The Rhumb Line or The Orchard
If anyone's interested, I had Wes on my podcast this week where we discuss our high school selves. He talks a lot about his early music-making and also about how he used to eat something called Chocolate Soup. Its fun! Here's an Apple Podcasts link (it's available wherever you listen, though): https://apple.co/30Tg5uZ
They just released a live album recorded in 2010 in Kyoto, and an expanded reissue of The Orchard is coming out 8/24
