Every now and then I think about how one of my teachers interviewed Bono years ago, with Bono lying on his lap, wearing sunglasses, hungover and apologising for it. Apparently he was partying with Michael Stipe and Thom Yorke the night before!
R.E.M. is the kind of band that I only know a couple songs but I actually love them. Shall I listen more of them? It seems that I do...
monster is pretty easily my least favorite of their 90s records but it's been really cool to see what they have to say about that era. it's definitely given the record more depth to me, particularly bc I hadn't really spent any time w the lyrics
All the talk about the Monster 25th anniversary release has got me deep into an R.E.M. phase again, and I'm enjoying it. I became a fan with Up so I'm really curious to see if they stick with the 25th anniversary releases up to that one. Seems fitting it would end with the Bill stuff, but Up was a huge album for me and really their last great one (I also love Accelerate, but not in the same kind of way). My Top 10 Favorite: 1. The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite 2. At My Most Beautiful 3. Disturbance at the Heron House 4. Untitled 5. Just a Touch 6. Be Mine 7. Tongue 8. Nightswimming 9. Me in Honey 10. Find the River Honorable Mentions to Strange Currencies, Man-Sized Wreath, Daysleeper, Hollow Man, Walk Unafraid.
Pretty solid top 10 there. Here's my random comment: Of all the bands that retire and return (almost everybody??), this is the ONE BAND that I really want to come back, even if just for a tour. The world is a better place with REM in it.
y'all like R.E.M.?? been jamming murmur and reckoning particularly hard lately. I tried to imagine bands that sound like this now and couldn't come up with much, bizarre to think of how alien it would be if an indie rock band came out and sounded like this out of the gate in 2019
Monster was my least favorite record of theirs and the remaster has changed that immensely, it's like a whole different album for me. Also the first time where a remaster has really changed my opinion like this, it's awesome.
