I think Automatic will also be my favorite record of theirs even though I get it's definitely not their ""Best"" or whatever. But I've been hearing that record literally since I was born and it's been incredibly formative for me. I'd probably put both Reckoning and Lifes Rich Pageant above Murmur too though, which makes me hopelessly uncool but oh well

 

There is 100% an argument to be made that Automatic is their best.

 

I would guess Automatic is the consensus best

 

Not that I feel that way, I probably lean ever so slightly towards the Murmur/Reckoning side, but across the fanbase I'd think Automatic is the one for the most people.

 

Up is so underrated. Listening to their 2001 Unplugged album again and god damn, Daysleeper is yet another triumph in character songwriting. Just gut wrenching.

 

"Daysleeper" is one of the many reasons Stipe is one of my favourite songwriters ever
