I don't know a ton about R&B but Ella Mai's record is just on repeat for the past month. It is so good. When mentioning 90s R&B, would Lauryn Hill be included or is that record more hip hop?
I personally usually call her a rapper and the album a Hip Hop album but really the album is both Hip Hop and R&B.
@Petit nain des Îles I just found this on that list. Obviously inspired by the J. Lo x LL classic (or, I guess, Debra Laws’ “Very Special”) but still fun. Might check out the album.
so H.E.R. won a bunch of grammy's last night. I feel like that album was barely spoken about here. Any fans? I've still yet to check it out.
It's good. She's not really doing anything that we haven't heard from other modern R&B artists before, but she does do that kind of sound really well. RIYL: Tinashe - Nightride, Syd - Fin, Ella Mai - S/T
Honestly, H.E.R. has been pretty whatever to me overall.... UNTIL the latest EP. I Used To Know H.E.R. Pt 2 is far and away her best release yet, if you ask me. I hope she continues that direction...
Really excited to hear where she's headed with her upcoming album. The potential is there. Ciara is back with yet another single. Hopefully an album is right around the corner, now that she got all of her masters back and started her own label.
Non-English R&B update alert. The Dutch-Surinamese-Chinese R&B singer Tabitha released a new album (she call its EP, but I call nine songs an album). It's a lot of fun. Heavily influenced by Caribbean music this time (Suriname is culturally Caribbean). She's really building a career after having been on some huge singles by Dutch rappers. I do think the cover is odd for her. Smells like A&R work to me.
