Didn’t get to rock it today since I was working but on my to do list for tomorrow is to listen to D’Angelo. RIP. I bought black messiah on vinyl when it came out just because I knew the name and got introduced to some of the best music that exists. Can only hope one day we hear what he was cooking up.
Whenever I listen to Brown Sugar, I always forget just how good it is. I only listened to it for the first time around lockdown and i’m not sure why. I’d listened to Voodoo and Black Messiah tonnes at that point and loved them, but never bothered with Brown Sugar. Very silly of me. Part of a perfect trilogy albums that may never be topped. Also i’ve noticed that i’ve not felt sad whilst listen to to his albums yesterday and today. They’re so full of love and joy and emotion that you get sucked in and start smiling at his genius. Nearly shed a tear when listening to Unshaken as I remembered the powerful moment in Red Dead 2 when it plays, though. Great fucking song. Think it may have been his last recorded song too.
I couldn't find a thread for Black Messiah so I'll just share this here: In tribute to D'Angelo, Mix with the Masters is giving free access to the making of Black Messiah. Check it out here.
Doing a discography run right now. Man Brown Sugar is still so fucking smooth. Great album. On Shit, Damn Motherfucker I swear I’ve heard the main bass(?)/beat sampled somewhere. I googled it and it’s been sampled on two songs that I don’t recognize at all.
