Yea I don't really like religion for those reasons but if it helps people and they are nice good people and don't adhere to the stupid wrong rules I guess it can be ok??? I just feel like people would be better off navigating that kind of thing on their own tho.

 

Also I’m sad @Dog with a Blog isn’t here because he has such a similar history with religion and I always identified with his thoughts on it.

Yeah religious education is compulsory but as both of my schools weren't religious they did the absolute bare minimum that they could.

I think it always pissed me off that people couldn't just be good people for the sake of it, but needed a reason like reaching heaven for it lol

Especially people like my gf's parents who are awful to their own child because she's gay but don't see how that isn't God-like at all

I think i turned away from the idea of a higher power as I continue to watch humans just shit all over each other and be their absolute worsts. People should be good because it's the right thing to do, too, rather than because they might be rewarded later.

At the same time, I continue to be more like agnostic, because who's to say there isn't a god or whatever? It's impossible to be certain, so I'll entertain the possibility, but not have it play a part in me just being decent to others.

I think I choose to be atheist rather than agnostic because if there was a god then they'd have to be an absolute arsehole to let so many people on the planet just suffer every day. The only god possible in my mind is not a good one.

 

No, I get what you’re going through. I think I have a much more negative view of religion than most people here, but what you’re talking about sounds more like something we all go through of finding connection when things feel hopeless and trying to work for those positives instead of the endless cynicism that’s around us a lot of the time.

Plus even if we disagree on certain things that doesn’t mean I hate you or something, you can definitely have faith in that!
