idk why it seems some people never figure out how to have empathy. I say that as someone who sure as hell didnt have empathy until I was in my early 20s.

 

It was, but *clears throat* someone got in the way

 

I had a weird experience of religion growing up, as my dad's family isn't religious and my mother had Catholicism forced on her to the point where she ended up hating it and wanting nothing to do with it. I wasn't exposed to religion at all for years and then they started teaching us religious studies when I was like 9 and I still remember being so confused. I was a smart kid but religion was the one thing that really baffled me lol

Oh yeah I totally get that. I’ve tried really hard to stop myself from even referring to it as “loss” or “losing faith” because that’s all still so tied up in the language of religion and makes it sound like I’m less than I was before I left the church. Finding the good in people and in the world and trying to make it better for the future without that being tied to faith or religion or anything else restrictive has been such a freeing thing for me as an adult.

 

Was religious studies a class they taught in grade school? I was raised Catholic but even as a very young kid I remember feeling terribly uncomfortable in religion class (my parents made me go to get my communion and confirmation) and at mass, never really got it or bought into it like I felt others did. I still feel uncomfortable about it all which is why I struggle so much with it.
