yup. credit unions usually have the best non-dealer rates so get that first. Especially if you're buying an older car, used car financing can get up to 8-10% APR from dealers or banks. Credit unions can usually get you around 2.99-4.00%.

Then a week before you're ready to buy start emailing out to all dealerships internet sales departments you're willing/able to travel to and tell them "I will be purchasing X Car with X package/add ons by the end of the week. Please send me your best price OTD (out the door so includes all fees/taxes)." And then when you have 2-3 dealers that send the lowest prices, offer the closest dealer or the one that has the color you prefer the option to match the lowest price. If they do, go buy it, if not, go with the lowest price one.

Also check kbb and edmunds for what the invoice price or "fair value" price is so you make sure you're paying something comparable and can leverage that price if a dealer is quoting you a high price.
