Staying in a hotel inside Disney sounds unattainably expensive. The tickets alone are so much

if there’s a deal going on you can usually stay at a couple of the smaller resorts (pop warner, sports themed) for fairly cheap, like 70-80 a night. Obviously they aren’t top of the line accommodations, but you’ll be at the parks most of the day anyways.

It’s nice being close enough to Disneyland to drive there and back home in the same day

As a frequent Disney-goer (living in NY), my wife and I have sort of mastered the ‘disney on a budget’. It’s by no means “cheap”, but like Grant said you can absolutely get a good deal on the value hotels and spend like $500 or less for 5-6 nights. I don’t like to use the excuse that “all vacations are expensive” because A. that’s not entirely true, and B. there are folks who don’t have the means to travel every year and might only vacation once every few years so, unattainable may not be out of the realm of acceptable descriptions when it comes to Disney, but there certainly are plenty of ways to make a trip down there affordable.
