solely speaking on the production, I do agree overall on your assessment of how it sounds but I don’t necessarily have a good reason to believe it was out of laziness and not artistic intent (tho I understand he’s pissed away all his good will so I am understanding of that pov). to me it feels very intentional and it brings to mind some of the more experimental vocal production on certain MBDTF cuts for me I guess and that personally endears me to it. I totally understand not liking how it sounds though, I guess I just disagree that it sounds like it was recorded in a tin can bc the sound that brings to mind for me is not what I personally hear haha. but regardless I feel like maybe it’s become shorthand in a way and I should just get used to that! lyrically? if I’m being honest I don’t think I have paid attention to them enough or remember them enough to comment atm. maybe I am just more charitable towards it because I think the track is incredible. yeah I figured that’s what you meant and I really wasn’t trying to come at you, or I would have quoted you directly haha, but I guess I have a weird hang-up with the shorthand and I should just get over it from this point on bc I can’t expect ppl to change how they engage with a site bc it annoys me personally lol.
I guess it's similarly constructed to his verse in The Blame Game but the length, context, and use of effects elevated that verse. This verse is too short and after hearing pusha just spit out straight flames for nearly 3 minutes having Kanye come in and seemingly not able to string two bars together in the same breath is just... Lack luster?
Honestly I think the Kanye verse on Dreamin is pretty fun lyrically if anything, it’s not special but it fits the vibe of the song and contributes to my overall really high opinion of that one. Like, even in 2022 Kanye’s part elevates the song for me. But I do kinda have to agree that from an audio fidelity perspective alone it doesn’t sound as good as the other vocals on the record and you can totally hear that it was sliced to fit the tempo. Combined those two things make me think it’s laziness rather than intent. (And really what since Daytona has earned Kanye the benefit of the doubt that he’s not mailing it in on some level?)
There is now a version on streaming where he separated the songs and made it into a Verzuz type thing. First 6 are Pharrell and last 6 are Ye.
When he was first describing the album I thought it sounded like that's what it was gonna be in the first place, I was actually surprised when they were mixed together and not divided by halves
I listened to the Pharrell and Ye tracks today in two separate settings and honestly, I do think I like the Ye tracks more, he somehow can still make really great beats despite his own music being horrendous
I keep waiting for news about a vinyl release. Also, what's it gonna take to get that Carly Rae Jepsen cover art recovered?
Man I need to go back to it some more, it fell out of my rotation a lot faster than I thought I would. I do love it but so much shit has come out this year
