Could be that the stream transcodes them, and it might be based on your available bandwidth at the time of streaming, or just that the player they use isn't very good. But the source files themselves are definitely 256 mp3.
Going back for seconds. The stretch of the first 3 songs is like a freight train barreling down the tracks. Unstoppable momentum.
stealing this from the stereogum comments because its spot on "this is so good. this sounds like being young but not too young anymore and drunk and pissed off but not being able to do anything about it because it's freezing and it's toronto so no one does anything with their anger but turn it inward and hate how you settled for a shitty apartment in parkdale"
I'm interested in knowing what people think of Pine Point as the closer. I like it a lot and think it works well, but I can see how others might disagree.
I love it - it proves they can do a lot more than their admittedly brilliant quick punk songs, and is a clever change of pace to end it on imo
Yeah, that's exactly how I feel. It acts as a counterbalance to the chaos and energy throughout the album. They wrap things up cleanly and lead you out of the album on a more gentle note.
i think can't win is my favorite outside of the first two second listen sort of reaffirmed my first. it's good but a little disappointing based on the singles and the hype, and so much other good stuff has come out that i don't know how much i'll listen to this
I agree on Can't Win being my favorite after two listens, and believe it or not, Old Wounds is in my bottom three tracks. I still like the song just fine, but it's not the kind of song I wanted from them, I'm much more a fan of their anthemic "happy songs about sad things" formula. I am not disappointed at all, and the guitars here are just so much fun throughout. Gonna spin this one a lot.
I kind of agree with the middle part of this. That being said, I am such a massive fan of the debut, it's somewhat untoppable in way that albums like On the Impossible Past are, which is why I need to try and refrain from comparing the two.
i think both this and the debut have a bunch of songs that are really, really good, and some that are just kind of there
Next time it's actually sunny in England (may be waiting a few months) gonna drive in circles around town and blast this really loud. Loving it more with every listen, what other bands are similar to this because I need more of it
If you like Old Wounds check out Single Mothers. If you like Single Mothers and wish they were a bar band that wrote concept albums about drugs and religion in the midwest, and had a lead singer that looks and sounds like a lame substitute teacher but is totally awesome, then check out The Hold Steady.
