I feel like there’s going to be something in the top 3 that no one will see coming. I didn’t think Solange was going to be their AOTY last year
eh solange made sense. i think sza hits that lower BNM that has gotten enough late year buzz to pop up higher, plus it hits all the marks of an album for them
Like LCD Soundsystem’s new one, it’s a very important artist’s third best album. Unlike LCD, I don’t know if there was a more culturally relevant album this year than DAMN. So I’m fine with it, but I’m also cool with publications choosing something different.
i wouldn't say important, they're not doing anything culturally important, but they were a landmark of indie music in the 00s so
Strange. Never heard of anything from them yet they always seem to headline festivals. Still need to listen to their newest one haha. What are the other two albums I should listen to by them?
king krule and perfyg will be high but pitchfork still has the conte nast/poptimism angle to go at, i can't picture a band on the smaller indie side getting the #1 at this point for pitchfork
I only say King Krule because it is the only album other than Kendrick to get 9.0+. I don’t think it will be #1, but I very much can see it in top 3. I thought about Perfume Genius too!! (My aoty)
Mount Eerie will probably be the one. Perfume Genius is excellent as well. Such a fucking great year.
just knowing pitchfork's focus right now i'm leaning towards the more mainstream records topping the list. last year, the highest artist that wasn't a huge pop/hip hop name was anohni at 8. 2015 had grimes and tame impala high but they were enormous and in the culture at that point, first smaller artist i'd say was courtney barnett at 9.
