After reading the news post and article about Brand New and end of the year lists, I am curious if ANY publications have included the album or not. Anyone seen anything?
kinda surprised by the lack of the randy newman album. it’s not my AOTY by any means but i expected it to dominate these lists.
Steve Earle and Bruce Cockburn put out solid albums this year also that I haven’t seen mentioned once. I think they fall into that same category. Edit: Willie Nelson and Marty Stuart also, though I think I may have seen Marty Stuart get one mention.
Laurel Halo album is very cool but I found it very...slippery, was kind of hard to wrap my head around it. Looking forward to diving deeper. This Mount Kimbie album, on the other hand, is hitting me very hard. Amazing stuff, ashamed I waited this long. They've come along way from their James Blake-esque beat stuff. For anybody waiting for the TMT list, this will likely be on it and holy shit it's amazing in a way I wasn't at all expecting
Thank u for finally listened to two of my faves this year! I get what you’re saying abt the Laurel Halo album. It’s very dense, but I have mostly been basking in its sonic pleasure above anything else, which I find to be plentiful. That Mount Kimbie album is sick. One of the most interesting blends of post-punk and electronic I’ve heard.
and don't get me wrong, it's obviously very good. Just like you said, very dense. Think it will reward future listens. MK on the other hand hit a bunch of emotional beats for me pretty immediately. Guess I gotta finally listen to the Ooz now
The OOZ is incredible, but another incredibly dense record. I’d love to hear what you think. It feels like the most thought out album and best use of the album format I’ve heard this year. I think I ended up placing it like 6th or 7th on my list as of now. The song with Mount Kimbie is better than anything on it though imo. One of the very best tracks of the year.
The most dense record I heard this year was Jlin. Super dense, very cool, not sure how soon I’ll go back to it
