I am not a Pitchfork hater by any means. Their album of the decade lists have formed my tastes more than almost anything. I check their site pretty much daily. I am fully supportive of their push away from indie music and into a wider variety of styles. I am very supportive of their efforts to promote artists from all genders and backgrounds. All that said, I do not like their albums list and am comfortable saying my tastes are drifting far from those of the site that helped make said tastes.
Good list overall. But it's also the only list so far that I added zero new albums from. Guess it's time to start my list now
Pitchfork does a good job of slighting the critically acclaimed albums I like and stanning the ones I don’t like. (Besides that Mitski, Kacey, and 1975 are all great) Probably my least favorite of the major publications at this point
They included Rico Nasty though! But yeah, out of the major publications I care the least about Pitchfork. Though most of that is due to their insufferable fanbase haha.
The Pitchfork list is very interesting. The top you could see coming from a mile away (though I never knew which one would be number 1). But there's also a few unexpected picks, especially when you compare to what got BNM and didn't make the list. MihTy and Camp Cope were nice surprises to see. DJ Koze so high up is really cool. Its been a strange year for music without many huge consensus albums and I think that's reflected in this list.
Her receiving a completely positive review but no BNM was a sign those at the top didn't rate the album as highly. I couldn't believe only one of her singles made the songs list. No FJM was disappointing to me, that album is beautiful. To think none of it's songs (Please Don't Die????) made the top 100 either... come on
AP's top 2018 albums: Janelle Monae, Kacey Musgraves, J Cole I find #s 3 and 4 very funny choices to be coming from the Associated Press
Yea Gods Favorite Customer is full of 10/10 stunners. So I’m just gonna pretend like every single publication split the votes across the entire album, hence why there are barely any appearances on any song list.
Okay me too It's the same philosophy I use to justify there being zero Tom Waits songs on the P4k best songs of the 70s, 80s or 90s lists.
I've always found it interesting how Pitchfork can rate an album an 8.5 or something, and then call it the second best album of the year out of nowhere. That's not a shot at Kacey Musgraves. That ranking just came out of nowhere from that particular publication. Same with albums like that Ty/Jeremih project that were given an average review but found their way in over stuff like FJM that was given more acclaim. It's not necessarily bad! Just notable. Pitchfork has a history of editorial inconsistencies though.
I assume that is because staff members etc. make their own lists or whatever and they combine them? It's normal that that leads to inconsistencies with reviews written by individuals That being said it was another abysmal year for Pitchfork lol
