If I’m being honest, I don’t really get the praise for that album. Like, it’s good writing, but I can’t really deal with his voice at this stage. I think there are much better albums in the genre this year that were either further back or not on this list at all. My biggest gripe about the list is that not-very-good Brent Cobb album being top 10, though.
I personally enjoy seeing what my favorite musicians enjoyed this year much more than what all these publications were in to. Here are lists from some of my favorite artists. Is that the worst list of list season I hear coming 'round the bend?!? Weezer, “Africa” – Rolling Stone Seriously, this thing is a fucking trainwreck and the entire Rolling Stone staff should be fired.
At least half of those songs are amazing and it’s one of the few lists to put Hop Along on it it so uh nope
This Is America should be top 5 and some random Paul McCartney song being over Ariana is peak Rolling Stone, also No Tears Left To Cry and God Is A Woman might be better than Thank U Next, my year end songs lists would have multiple Ariana songs for sure
Those songs are great. Maybe not both top 5 but I'm not mad about it. And I'm no massive fan of his, thought most of the album was bad or at least really boring. But those two songs are really good. Especially Nice For What. When I make a top songs list I'd expect both to be in my top 10 along with Kacey, Brian Fallon, Foxing, The Wonder Years, Father John Misty, maybe some Restorations.
The POW Best Rap Songs of 2018 Every year Passion of the Weiss has by far the best rap lists, especially if you don’t want to see the same five songs you always do. It’s also Drake free and the Drake diss by Pusha is on #2 so that’s a huge bonus.
I don't love the Saba album, but this track is a masterpiece and its absence from like every major list is baffling.
Completely agreed. Switch Lori McKenna into John Prine's spot on this list and then it would be at least palatable.
I disagree with any negative opinions on the Prine album, the guy is a legend and this album stands up with some of his best work which is saying a lot. If you are someone who is big on vocals, I get that his voice isn’t the greatest at this stage of his career, but it never has been a strength of his. The guy has beaten throat cancer twice so it’s pretty incredible he can sing at all at this point.
The emotion Saba packs into “Jesus got killed for our sins/ Walter got killed for a coat” on “BUSY/SIRENS” is the most devastating moment of 2018. Record getting looked over is a damn shame.
The SOPHIE write up is fantastic. If anyone hasn't read the TMT review of the record, I highly recommend it. For me, its the best piece of music writing this year. Music Review: SOPHIE - OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES
There's definitely a mistake on the NME list. This blurb is under two different artists, Confidence Man (at 54) and Connan Mockasin (64): The Aussie dance pranksters turned in a ‘90s-influenced big beat bonanza with this perfectly crafted collection of bubblegum bangers. JB I don't know either act so I don't know which one it actually belongs under.
