c'mon ian reissues and non-albums and shitty people shouldn't be on your list :( he probably has half of my list on there though, haha
For a music writer, he has such narrow musical tastes. That top 20 all are in a pretty small genre and there are what, two female in the entire top 20?
jank is non binary, world is has women in it, pinegrove was mainly written by one dude but there is a woman in the live band, hotelier, well i'm not sure
that is (maybe) a fact, i feel weird weighing a front person over any other member of the band though. i can see it with pinegrove because evan is the main songwriter but for world is katie (and derrick nicole who was in the band for that record) and were involved in the writing process i feel like that should be weighed the same than a band with a female singer and men in her band actually counted 18 or so in the whole list that weren't just white men. that isn't horrible, all things considered. there will be far worse lists in that regard posted by contributors on this site
he's counting the reissue but yes that shouldn't be included half of jank came out last year (though there are other reasons for listing them being problematic) wye oak is a bunch of outtakes and not really a real album
I think it's relevant for Pinegrove since, if I'm not mistaken, she's not on the record. Otherwise, it's irrelevant.
she has a few vocal parts but yeah, it's evan's songwriting and she doesn't even always tour with them though if you haven't checked out that half waif record (which is her band) you should check it out! it's really great
yeah thats what im saying. its stupid i know nothing about jank other than i find them extremely irritating in concept and on record wye oak is definitely an album
The live aspect of a band is still important but I see what you mean. Still, there's a fixation on "female fronted" bands when it should just be women in bands in ANY role.
the band doesn't even really consider it their new LP, it's sort of like the kendrick release from this year. i don't think i'd consider that an album for an album's list
I mean it is a little complicated in that part of the problem is people who immediately class "female-fronted" as a genre and react poorly to all female voices. Giving them a pass because they include bands with female drummers or bass players lets them skate a little on a bias against female singers, etc. Not necessarily black-and-white.
If the problem is female representation in music in general then I don't see why it's skating by. Not liking female voices is ignorant and ill informed regardless I'm just saying the goal is representation and when the women aren't front and center people tend to just not register there's a woman in the band. That's a bit of a problem
Not disagreeing. I'm just saying it's worth paying attention to whether there are female vocals if we're examining diversity on a particular list, since that's the big hurdle. I can't imagine anyone listening to (because I am brain-freezing on a better example) The Summer Set and saying "Ugh, man, I just can't get into it when I hear a girl drumming" because there's no way they could possibly tell that while listening. Vocals are really the only area you can discern the gender divide purely by listening, so while female representation is great, I'm not going to pat anyone on the back for it if they still have almost no female vocals on their list, like this one.
But I don't think people should be slammed for having no females at all when in fact there are, just not fronting
