yeah looked through again and couldn't find anything, heh
individual writer lists are great because then you at least get the individual personality of everyone contributing which is always real nice

i dont think pitchfork released them. they did big "my year in music" pieces in the pitch in 2014 but that was it iirc.

It's just lame idk why people care about these lists anymore to begin with

    Ah fuck it.

I love the EOTY list arguing.

It's become part of the Holiday Season for me.

i agree theyre pretty much useless lol. the most interesting thing to happen on them was when pitchfork panned matangi and then it places like high 30s or something on the eoty list

something that is probably a more effective criticism of these sites is that a lot of them share writers/staff and have serious diversity issues in their masthead

yeah freelancing writers across many big publications is definitely a big reasoning for it but at the same time these publications won't pay enough to even get a very solid full time staff

Like I said on twitter this morning, music journalism is boring

People have realized they don't need publications to discover new music. They just need a good circle of friends and a streaming service

mostly boring because there aren't many great writers and those great writers are brought down by publications who mostly want things like more listicals or frank ocean thinkpieces

i mean they probably dont earn enough money to pay full time staff.

yeah that's just the industry as a whole. not specifically blaming the publications.
whole thing is in a bad spot

I think there's real value in criticism and journalism around art. It's a shame we've pretty much entirely lost it.

I feel like part of this year being worse for publications pushing smaller acts is that there has been a high profile release probably once a week (averaging out between dead weeks and weeks with many big releases) and more energy is going to keeping up with the current.

differing opinion: I love year end lists way more than I should and check Pitchfork/Stereogum/Fact/RA/TMT multiple times daily and though the yield is less that it once was I still find it a great tool for scooping up whatever I missed.
I also think the fact that I'm finding less from these sites than I once did is also due to the increasing ease of finding/hearing new music and using communities like this one to stay on top of what's coming out which isn't really the fault of music publications

Yeah, I love lists - read them all. I don't really care about the order, it's more just a way to discover new music. I think there'd be less squabbling if publications just released their top 50 albums in A-Z order, with a little blurb on each, maybe with a RIYL or a Youtube link or whatever. That'd be ideal.

One of the only things I read per music journalism is Fader cover stories/features bc they're in depth and amazing. That's pretty much it and checking the Pitchfork BNM's/scores bc they reviews are mostly terrible

I also read EOTY lists just so I can get mad when people put things like Run The Jewels as AOTY.

Weirdly one of the best in-depth articles I can remember in recent memory was from Buzzfeed, who did actual investigative journalism into all the fake bands who passed themselves off as The Zombies in the late 60s.

I held onto some leftover goodwill towards pitchfork because they were an absolute resource guide for me growing up in the 'burbs, but today i saw a Morgan Stanley ad on their home page and so i probably won't even look at their list tbh.
