I've been jamming this song a lot lately. I've really come back to that record after not playing it much during the middle part of the year.
idk I relistened and it's a solid album, would crack my top 30 or so but I still can't get behind the AOTY hype that a lot of publications are pressing on it. Wouldn't call it polarizing since I'm not completely disagreeing with it being good
I haven't seen it get aoty anywhere so I'm not sure what your point is. Just seems people here don't like it that much. If you like it I'm not talking about you
I compiled the first 16 lists posted in this thread and it was on 15 of them. Let's not play dumb like it's not very hyped.
lol I mean do you want me to go through 99% of the lists and point out that it's usually ranked in the top 15?
This is always impossible to articulate, but it wasn't bad. It just didn't click. Some songs had nice melodies but the really uniform sooooorta low-fi/verb aesthetic create distance that kept me emotionally removed. Others just had nothing in the melodies that grabbed my ear. I'd find myself turning back to my grading after a chorus. But then on "Sister", the hooks and the passion and the emotion hit and just knocked me on my ass. But it just didn't cohere like that often enough.
to me, this is less not seeing something in this as it is seeing more in other albums. i loved her previous release, pretty sure it was a top ten or so record for me whatever year that was. i feel like the genre or whatever this fits in had a lot of releases this year, most of which i liked more, and (to me at least), this was a step back from her previous releases. fully realize i'm probably alone in that feeling, hah
It's pretty unmemorable, other than Shut Up And Kiss Me (which is awesome), none of the songs have any particularly strong hooks, or memorable melodies. The songwriting was plain and not particularly interesting, and the whole thing just meadered along until it finished. I remember feeling pretty similar about her last one. I'm glad lots of people are enjoying it, but it came and went with a shrug for me.
I will say I think it's a significant improvement over her last, which I found really monotonous. It's a better record. Just not one for me.
its not even like anyone has said they hate this record, just that they werent totally enamored with it. doesnt even seem polarizing, just seems like it didnt connect. i know she's never been able to really draw me in wholly either. like, i get why people love it and i recognize the talent but it just doesn't resonate with me for w/e reason. im more confused by how defensive ppl are of it, honestly
I've only heard like 4/5 songs from it but I thought they were fine to good besides Shut Up and Kiss Me which I didn't like at all.
