seems kinda crazy that there's nothing remotely heavy on there, guess stousy was really carrying that alone also, i feel like most years in the past, they've been a list i could check out for stuff i missed throughout the year. there were only like 6 albums on that list that i hadn't listened to at least a handful of times. kinda interesting to me
Predictability within a publication is cool. If I keep up with Pitchfork, of course the albums on the EOTY list are going to be what they hype. Predictability across lists is what I was referring to. Since there are so many lists out there, ideally what I would love to do is figure out which publication lists have the strongest slant towards things I like and find new albums they liked and I haven't heard based off of that. It's hard to do when the majority of the lists have the same consensus top 20 that I've heard already by following music kind of closely. A few of them, like Paste, Rolling Stone, and some of the rap specific lists have done a good job of that, but the majority don't and that's a reasonable criticism, I think. Some of the niche ones are really cool too, but are also daunting since I don't have any sort of baseline with those.
what are the best lists that have been posted in this thread that dont have like beyonce, rihanna, frank ocean etc etc in the top 10?? nothing against those artist - id just like to see something different and honestly a lot of it just isnt for me.
i mean i already kind of talked about this earlier in the thread. these writers work at like every outlet. they freelance, they have staff jobs, etc. thats a systemic issue stemming from problems with ad money and page views in general and then it dovetails into thefact that big name artists are the ones driving the clicks to begin with. if you want to find things these publications like that you havent heard you're probably not going to find many of them in lists literally designed to be representative of a consensus, but its not like they arent being written about. YG and Kamaiyah are everywhere on these lists, and if you dig into who wrote about them or the publications that did you'll probably find things like payroll giovanni and nef the pharaoh and the new e-40 album. i guess i still don't really get what people are looking for from these lists, the likelihood of finding a niche album on a list of 50 albums generated by tallying votes from like 20+ people you read for a full year doesn't seem very high to me. thats both a blessing (YG and huerco s and vijay sharing space on a list is amazing and probably wouldnt have happened even a decade ago) and a curse, because everyone is omnivorous these days theres gonna be more overlap and less specialization.
i dont think dvsn had the kind of widespread support among p4k staffers that would have allowed it to grace the top 50. i saw some pushback towards it in general on twitter
Yeah, I know it's not as widely loved, but I thought it would be an obvious pick considering it got bnm and 4/10 of the tracks on the album got bnt. It seemed like a more likely pick than say 21 Savage or Kamaiyah (no shade to those two, I love them both)
Aquarium Drunkard's year in review. Always one of my favorites. Aquarium Drunkard » Aquarium Drunkard :: 2016 Year In Review
yeah i wish the process was less opaque, it's always interesting which non-bnm/8.0s make it over things that were better received on release. i'd like to look at individual lists more than anything.

How the hell did Nothing - Tired Of TOMORROW make 50 greatest shoegaze albums of ALL TIME when it was released this year?! And if that is the case how is it not even on the year end list? lol oh pitchfork
