Now that this album is out, I think I can finally make one good album of songs from their post-hiatus releases. There's some standouts ("Bishops", "Heavens Gate") but overall I think I've just outgrown these guys...
"Felt soul" is a perfect way to describe the feeling. They were always poppy, but it felt authentic. Nowadays, everything just sounds hollow. It's like seeing a big blockbuster in the theatre - you enjoy it, it's good to eat popcorn to, but in the end it's all relatively mindless.
The album is great though but I wouldn't put it in the area of Folie à Deux and AB/AP, their best albums. I'm just disappointed that half of it was released over the past nine months. Kind of takes the kick out of listening to an album when it releases, which I still prefer over singles. But it's still great. These guys are the most consistent band around.
The fact that there was this kind of a mess up. Yes it’s annoying, but find joy in the suffering I say.
Dead on. I just don't hear much humanity on this album. It's like they're putting a puzzle together of disparate clever-on-first-glance lyrics, catchy "woah-oh" melodies, and popular tones/moods (ie: Going full "Shape of You" on Hold Me Tight). Results in a final piece that feels more assembled than grown. I get why their music ended up like this, but it's just not what I'm looking for from pop.
If this were true it would still be a solid album. FOB could make an uninspired album full of hooks and I'd eat it up
I thought this was a fun listen. But it doesn't feel like a cohesive 'album'; more so, a collection of singles. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I know that I found FOB to be much more authentic around FUCT when Pete was trying to sell me his clothing line, and his children’s book, and his eyeliner. Now their music just feels like a hollow cash grab.
