This was pretty much perfect to me. I’m sure there are flaws but I was enjoying myself far too much to notice. I give it two rocky thumbs down
Yeah tighten it up a bit and tone back a little bit of the cringier humor and it’s a pretty flawless film.
the movie makes the whole coma thing seem pretty routine, when in the book it's talked about how dangerous it is. Also, for it to be even remotely successful you have to have some sort of rare gene. That's a big reason why Grace is ultimately sent, he has the right genetics for the coma drug to be successful.
Really good, wholesome film. Enjoyed the friendship between Grace and Rocky. Also jumps from present to pre-expedition was placed very well. Humanity is saved by Grace.
Recently enjoyed 3 works of fiction in rapid succession with main characters named grace. Resident Evil 9, Ready or Not 2, and this.
I absolutely adored this and thought this better than the book tbh. It fixes my biggest qualm, which was the characterization of Strat. Absolutely gorgeous cinematography. Knew Fraiser was cooking within the first five minutes, specifically when Grace first wakes up and the table and cup are vertical, while the rest of the items in the frame are horizontal. Also the Astrophage collection scene was stunning, as well as the entire Astrid sequence. Didn’t see many people mention but Pembertons work on the score was immense. Also, perfect use of Gracias à la vida Loved to get a big budget blockbuster film that has such joy for science and learning. Will be a comfort film of mine for the years to come
The only annoying thing about the score was that I saw this on Sunday the 15th, an early preview showing, but the score wasn't released until Friday and I was itching to listen to it. Didn't disappoint, comfortably stands on its own.
I was fine with the dialogue because that's also how I would be if I was the first person to contact extraterrestrial life They did such a good job with Rocky, what if Dug from Up had a master's in engineering is an insane vibe but it worked
Was bracing for wall to wall “so THAT just happened” quips but luckily not the case. Solid buddy comedy.
My issue with the humor was before rocky shows up. Some of the gosling solo jokes just didn’t work for me. Once rocky showed up basically everything hit for me.
this ruled. one of the most gorgeous movies i’ve ever seen. there were some key details in the book i feel like they glossed over and the flashbacks were handled fine but i agree sometimes it seemed like he wasn’t really reacting to the flashbacks as they happened in the same way he did in the book. i’m glad i knew what to expect going in terms of this being more of a light hearted romp than a super serious life or death type sci fi movie
the so I met an alien line made me cringe when I heard it in an ad so thats where my expectations were lol
little things like this make me very glad i read the book first. my brother in law is the only one in my family who didn’t read the book and he needed a good few things explained to him. i can see how the pacing could make things confusing to someone who doesn’t already have a grasp of what’s going on. i read the book pretty recently which might make me biased toward the book but my gf read it a couple years ago so it was a lot of “oh yeah!!! i forgot about that” moments for her which is fun
first 30 minutes was getting very close to “big chungus” level humor from Gosling. My theater was eating all of it but I was a bit worried I was going to hate it. Luckily it settled in to a grove that I was able to get on board with
Looking to pull in $80 million domestically for the weekend which would make it the 2nd highest opening weekend for a non franchise film behind Oppenheimer. Really good numbers.
This was great. Can’t say how refreshing it is to get a cowardly main character who doesn’t have kids or a partner but ends up saving humanity anyway.
