Damn it, Grace, you racist piece of shit.

Imagine on his planet there's another race of people smooth like glass making all the rocks work in the engine room while they go explore space.

I guess Rocky had the last laugh.

I would have gladly taken a suicide mission over remaining a middle school teacher. Truly the worst grades to teach, followed by freshmen.

In the book is it explained why his crewmates died? The cause of Rocky’s crewmates’s deaths was such a pivotal issue that I thought it was odd that they seemed to skip the same for the humans

I don’t have any sense of how much of Rocky was CGI and how much was puppet, but even with the parts that were almost certainly CGI, the crystal barrier contraption always added the feeling that there was clear weight to helps convince you that he’s a real little guy hanging out on a spaceship. They probably spent a lot of time dreading over how to depict a faceless rock crab creature in a way that you’d truly buy that Ryan Gosling could become best friends with it, without also going too overboard with it and making him cartoonish

I also liked the contrast of those moments within the ship that portrayed a fundamentally simple and grounded genuine relationship vs. how supernatural and mythical all the space stuff felt - the Petrova line scene, the planet, Rocky’s ship

Finally got to see this on an overnight. It was amazing! The twist was spoiled from the trailer for me, but I don’t feel I lost much as the twist that he was forced onto the ship was a gut punch. Will probably read the book once I finish Hero of Ages.

Only bummer was the theater took it off of the high quality sound and larger screen for god damn Mario. Hoping it gets another release another time in IMAX down the road maybe.

I think my oldest will love this in a couple of years

My understanding is that Rocky was almost entirely puppetry. And supposedly the movie used very little CGI? Might be wrong on that last part. In the book the human crew is way more fleshed out and does explain what happened to the crew as well as what it took to even be able to make it to the crew

If the idea that for a film to be profitable is that it needs to make two and a half times its budget is true, then based on the estimates for this weekend that say it has now cracked the $500m mark worldwide, which means that it has now become a financial as well as a critical success.

In the hypothetical world beyond where the story ends, I would hope that Rocky and his species never decide to visit earth on their own because you just know that the humans would kill and conduct experiments on them

In the book there is a specific gene that allows someone to survive a coma that Grace happens to have which is why it had to be him. Also, they knew it was a risk just surviving the coma as having the gene does not guarantee survival just make it so you can.

Really fucking dumb that the move just ignored it and killed off a crew with no explanation lmao

We did question why the crew died a little post-movie, but ultimately decided it wasn't really that important and figured it could've been a similar deal to why Rocky's crew died.

Except that scenario is something Grace accounted for because he understood radiation, unlike Rocky's people heh. But ultimately it doesn't bother me too much

It was definitely a weird oversight that could have been explained in a line or two.
