the only one i've read is The Martian, and that was a decade ago. definitely want to get to the other two, but i definitely hear more about PHM the book than i do Artemis.
Took my 8-year-old daughter, 11-year-old son and his two friends to go see this today and everyone loved it.
We all know sign of the times is about a mother dying during childbirth obviously what else could it possibly be about it's so obvious
Damn this was so much fun and I'm very glad I saw it in IMAX. My sister and BIL were a little let down because they read the book but also still enjoyed it. Guess it just kinda glossed over and skipped a lot and they would have preferred it to be split over multiple movies. But idk, I had no problem following it and was hooked the whole time. Really loved this.
Yeah my BIL was like "movie 1 should have ended with him meeting Rocky" and I'm like... Dude Rocky was what made the movie so loveable haha typical braindead movie audiences needed him to keep them engaged.
My only gripes: 1) if you wake up from a multi year coma, you ain't climbing a ladder first thing. I hate when movies and shows do this. I was shocked that Stranger Things S5 got this right. But apparently in the books, they use electrodes to stimulate his muscles while in the coma? But even then it's still a few days before he can really walk? And he's not allowed to leave that room until he at least answers that 2 + 2 equals 4, but they just decided not to do that here? 2) They didn't explain how the other astronauts died. 3) I didn't understand why Rocky lived and his other people didn't, but my sister and BIL explained it's because the fuel shielded him from radiation since he was an engineer living around the engines and fuel tanks. Guess I missed that part. Oh well, I would still fist Rocky's bump.
as someone who's in a long-term relationship with an evolutionary biologist (and by proxy has several other friends who are as well), i've been made very aware of people's gripes with Grace putting test tubes side by side in the centrifuge
I laughed really hard when Rocky said Grace's way of eating was disgusting and then showed his disturbing way of eating. Also, damn, because all of you kept saying that Rocky made you cry, I went into this fully expecting him to die lol. Thank God that didn't happen.
usually i agree, but Weir is known for his books (and by proxy the movies) being fairly scientifically accurate (as close as you can get with a scenario like this). it's just funny that that's the one, simplest oversight. even i remembered from high school chemistry to balance a centrifuge or you'll risk breaking it.
for the record, i absolutely loved the movie and it didn't bother me in the slightest. just funny they managed to overlook it.
They also had a huge continuity error with his glasses in the scene that they told him they wanted him to go on the mission and I’m the only one that seems to care!!!
Even that in the book is different too. From what I remember in Rocky’s culture you don’t eat in front of anyone so he pushes back on that
oof, just now seeing Andy Weir showing up on Critical Drinker's YouTube channel a couple days ago and playing into some of his shtick/expressing his admiration for CD. not a good look
he's one of the big "anti-woke" media reviewers/grifters from YouTube that pushed a lot of racist and sexist narratives around a bunch of blockbusters the past decade. just not a good dude. a little disappointing to see Andy give him the time of day
Well this has held on far better than I expected in its second weekend, dropping only an estimated 32.3% in the US and cracking $300m worldwide. Still a long way to go until it gets profitable, but I'm pleased it is doing well.
Tbh that's generally fine if he keeps it to himself. A lot of people don't seem to grasp that they can simply just shut the fuck up and keep things to themselves as long as they aren't hurting anyone.
