Been on a Leprous kick recently. I think The Congregation is quintessential modern progmetal, then they experimented a little for Malina, then made the full transformation for Pitfalls. It's not progmetal in a traditional, Dream Theater-esque way, but it really is incredible.
Been absolutely loving all the singles this band have been putting out. 6 singles out for the 10-song album out next month. Great stuff in the VOLA, Leprous, Caligula's Horse vein of progmetal.
I am on my huge Dream Theater kick that happens once every 5 years or so where I don't listen to anything else for basically a month man their 90s stuff was just something else
Oh I just started listening to them, with Awake being the next album! Been diving into tons of prog bands the past few weeks. A couple I didn't really like after all but I also have plenty of new faves now. Will probably spam this thread with recs later this week lol
Awake is one of my favourites, some borderline Alice in Chains type stuff on that album that they unfortunately never did again. the closer is also a really special piece, they really lost something when Kevin Moore left even though I still enjoy most of the discog after
I'm weird, and really only enjoy Train of Thought as that's the only one I had as a kid. The other stuff just hasn't really clicked with me yet.
Train of Thought is probably one of my least favourites ha, the nu-metal/rapping parts do not work for me
Not sure how to feel about the earlier albums yet, but I just put on Falling into Infinity and New Millenium is a banger. Instantly my favorite song from them so far. Also makes me wonder if Between The Buried And Me are inspired by them in general? Maybe because I just did a discography run, but that song in particular is almost like proto BTBAM during the jammy section.
saw Dream Theater earlier this year with my brother, they're his favorite band. Played for like 3 hours across the whole catalog. Brother was having a great time but I am not a fan and it was brutal
BTBAM is hugely influenced by DT, with Coma Ecliptic in particular sounding like a DT tribute album at points.
I would guess that almost every modern progmetal band can trace their roots back to Dream Theater, Opeth, or Tool, or a combination of the three.
Interesting, I feel like my third eye is opening and I suddenly gained a wider understanding of music Excluding their pre-Alaska records, Coma Ecliptic is my least favorite album so I'll have to revisit it with that context in mind.
not a lot of people love FII and it does have some extremely rough songs on it, but I do agree New Millennium is a tune. that and Trial of Tears do a lot of heavy lifting for me on that album
Ultimately I had a hard time with a good chunk of the album. There's a certain amount of kitsch or cheese I can handle but the hard rock mid tempos are a bit much for me. I prefer when they lean on their jammier and heavier side. I probably still have to get used to their sound.
yeah Burning My Soul straight up sounds like a Creed song lol, some extremely questionable decisions made in tracklisting that album the good news is the next one up is Scenes From a Memory, not only their high point but one of the best prog albums ever imo. they really got it all on wax with that one
Oh yeah I liked that one much better. Also put Six Degrees on while doing some errands and it felt like the most epic side quest ever. I'm going to have fun spending more time with these two.
Six Degrees is a liiiittle too long for me but the first 2 songs on disc 1 are insanely good. the bit on Blind Faith with the guitars and keys playing in unison flipped my brain inside out first time I heard it
Rest in peace, Brent Hinds of Mastodon. He created my favorite guitar solos and was a truly unique musical force.
I love both 6DOIT and FII. FII has genuinely some of my favorite DT songs (New Millennium, Peruvian Skies, Hollow Years, Hell's Kitchen/Lines in the Sand, Trial of Tears). I'd cut Anna Lee (and find a way to squeeze in Raise the Knife, which is one of their best songs) but I at least like most of the rest. 6DOIT is just a monster. It's a little bloated and The Great Debate is ham-fisted but the instrumentals are cool. Misunderstood and Disappear are some of the best left turns in their discog.
I absolutely loved Train of Thought. In the Name of God is one hell of a closer, one of my favorite songs from them so far.
My coworker puts on random radio stations at work and they're normally pretty boring. So imagine my shock today when I hear ELP's "Tarkus" start up. Messaged him going "Just a heads up, this song is fucking 20 minutes lol".
