New Vola song. I like it, but my initial impressions are that the chorus hook isn't as good as they've been in the past, and the main synth line is slightly overbearing. Excited for a potential new album from them this year though.

Also I got new headphones, and one of my test albums is Opeth - Ghost Reveries. Listening to it now, and it is really such an unbelievable album. Masterfully produced, and just contains riff after riff that are all so good. Climbing up the list of my favorite albums of all time.

Everyone is saying it sounds like old Opeth because of the growls, but it basically sounds like In Cauda Venenum with the aggression amped up just slightly in the instrumentals and obviously more aggressive vocals.

I just feel like people are going to act like this is some huge departure while still dismissing Newpeth, and that feels disingenuous to me.

Exactly how I feel, ICV with growls haha. But ICV (and all Newpeth c'mon now) was sick so let's goooo

  10. Don't exactly know if they're prog, the sludgy undertones and Mastodon-esque riffing hooked me in, but I've stumbled upon Dvne and I need more stuff like it at the moment

Their new album is great too. My go to on the slightly sludgier side of prog metal is The Ocean, especially their Phanerozoic I and II albums. Just start at Phanerozoic I and you'll know quickly if that's what you are looking for.

  12. You must be reading my mind because I was already planning a The Ocean discography run! Need to familiarize myself more with their early work in particular.

new Leprous single finally feels like the first single that sounds like an organically heavy song, not just one where they're like, "Look guys I promise we can still be heavy!" Really excited for this album.

newest Vola single is also pretty good. Smoothest and lightest of the singles so far, but they do that really well.

The new Leprous album is out Friday, but also the first new album from Anciients in 8 years. Feels like the perfect midpoint between BWP/Ghost Reveries Opeth and Mastodon. @Crisp X since you were in a Dvne mood a while ago I definitely think you should check this out.

speaking of Leprous: doing a mini discog run (Congregation through Aphelion) before the album comes out tomorrow. I feel a little different about Leprous' recent discog than most of their fans, and really enjoyed their last two albums, even though they were way less "metal" than previous outings. Probably because I really only got into them at the end of last year. The Congregation is still my favorite of theirs though, a perfect blend of their more progressive leaning earlier albums with crystal clear production, catchy songs, while still retaining a lot of cool prog elements. Rewind and The Flood are incredible back to back on the album for me.

The new Leprous album is an interesting one to me. It seems like it is more straightforward, a little darker than their last few, and doesn't have quite the highs of previous albums, but I keep coming back to it over and over. I think it is really consistent, and an easier listen all the way through than they tend to be, and it just breezes by. I think it'll be on my AOTY top 10. The closer is really cool, and I love the chorus melody.

my partner is a big fan of some of their earlier work (i believe he specifically mentioned The Congregation and Malina as his favorites, as well as calling their 2016 live album one of his all-time favorites). he really disliked Aphelion, but thought this was a great return to form (albeit one that gets somewhat monotonous near the end). i don't have as much familiarity with the band besides Aphelion and hearing the live album during a road trip, but this new album was really really good.

Yeah there seems to be two main camps with Leprous: you either only like the albums up to the Congregation (still my personal favorite) and nothing after that, or you’re generally cool with most of it, except the more harsh early albums.

I actually really like the newest albums, and can’t get into anything pre-Congregation, but I’m a newer fan, and took in all the discog (except for this new one obviously) all at once. And yes, the live album is absolutely unreal. A rare live album coinciding with the fan favorite album. Great performances across the board.

yeah the mix sounded incredible on that live album. hoping we can stumble across a vinyl copy for sale. also trying to locate the bonus track for Melodies of Atonement but haven't found it yet, and while i'd love to play it and the Dolby Atmos mix over my setup, i'm not sure if i wanna shell out $70+ to hear all of those.

I honestly feel like the new one feels like a different path the band could have taken from Coal. I don't understand any of the people are saying that it feels like Aphelion at all. It's much darker and the soundscapes are way weirder. Lots of cool sounds here that tickle my brain the right way, an absolute headphones album.

Definitely a headphones album. To me it sounds like a continuation of the dark/heavy with choruses from Congregation but more straightforward. It seems to be getting somewhat meh reactions from fans because I think they heard one scream in Like A Sunken Ship and got way too excited about it being a sign of things to come, or people just love shitting on modern day Leprous, even though it definitely shares more DNA with Coal/Congregation/Malina than Pitfalls/Aphelion.

I think we’ll see a similar reaction to the new Opeth, of people who will take it on its own merits and people who will have some unattainable idea of what it could sound like, which seems to set you up for failure.

  24. Couldn't get into the new Leprous, sadly. I think they need to change it up because resorting to the same songwriting tricks gets old after a couple songs. It sounded like one long song to me.

It definitely feels like more songs have the same structure here. A lot of, start really quiet, slowly add dynamics to a big, dramatic finish.
