I really just like Coheed, but I think it’s mainly cause of the hooks. I heard some of The Dear Hunter and liked it, so I might check them out if they’re in the OP along with Coheed…
I’m looking up more bands that are progressive metal or rock and I guess dir en grey’s newer stuff is, so that’s cool. They’re amazing.
I think Vola are a pretty easy sell for the melodic side of the genre. Check out their newest album, Witness. Chock full of catchy choruses.
Happy to see Agent Fresco mentioned, followed by sadness as I'm still waiting for a follow up of their latest album. I hope next year's the one! Yeah they've had such a wild evolution soundwise. From their proggier albums, Uroboros and Dum Spiro Spero are top tier.
Ashamed to have forgotten to mention Arch Echo: Super upbeat, bouncy, bright, technical instrumental prog-metal.
Friday I checked out the new unprocessed (more aggressive than I expected) and the new Plini. I liked Plini a good bit!
Any bands close to this sound also with great vocals/lyrics? I love Polyphia and Aaron Echo sounds great but I never really put on stuff without vocalists except in rare occasions. Huge Coheed fan.
Unprocessed are kind of Polyphia clones with vocals. I think their album "Gold" is a good start. They released a new one Friday called "...And Everything In Between" and it seems to be a little more aggressive, so depending on how you like your vocals I would start there. Also a lot of the bands already mentioned, I think they're good enough to listen to the instrumental versions of their albums. Protest the Hero, Caligula's Horse, and Haken can all get pretty wild instrumentally while having some nice vocal melodies layered on top.
Figured I’d share one of my favorite bands of the past few years, Vexes. They play somewhat of a progressive alternative metal in the vein of Koi No Yokan era Deftones or Clairvoyant era The Contortionist. They released a double album last year. “Beyond the Sinking”: “Low Choices”:
That description sounds extremely up my alley. Checking out now. I also went to Sput to see if there were any reviews or if it had any following over there, and lo and behold, haha
the more I revisit Caligula's Horse's catalog the more I think that no one else is currently executing that type of music on their level, or at least no one else I've heard. and I've heard a lot!
Yeah they’re definitely scratching an itch for me no other band is doing right now. The combo of technicality while still staying catchy and having really good vocals is rare. If Charcoal Grace is as good as I think it could be, they’re approaching favorite band status
Speaking of: I think this is the 10 minute opener. Part of me wants to hold off, but the other part of me knows I don’t have that kind of self control.
I have even less self control than I thought. Transported to New Zealand to listen. It is exactly what I would hope a 10 minute CHorse opener would sound like. There are two guitar solos before any vocals come in. This is arguably more progressive than anything off Rise Radiant. Definite AOTY incoming.
The Chronicles of Father Robin anyone? Norwegian prog ~rock ft members of Wobbler and the Samuel Jackson Five this e.p from yesterday is good, tho I prefer the sept release a bit more on the long form heavy-psych / prog metal side, fucking cool band!
Def feels super inspired by 70s psych/prog rock. Not my usual jam, but I think the right band could execute this in a way that I love. I know modern day Opeth is influenced from a similar place, so that’s what this reminds me of on first pass.
Hell yea lot of the same things I like about uriah heap, post trilogy zeppelin, sir lord baltimore ect. Some real multi instrument jam & pretty stuff like modern opeth for sure!
