God it's been fucking forever since I listened to these guys much. Sound Awake was so good but I somehow forgot about it over the years. Despite my hype for it, Asymmetry I remember being so hard to get into... and skimming it again now, the production was probably a huge factor. It's awful. Enjoying the new one so far, but it certainly doesn't have the immediacy or heaviness of Sound Awake. Will see if it's a slow burner.
Another +1 for the new Karnivool album. It’s a great listen. It will require additional spins as I often find their approach to songwriting and melody to be very unorthodox. It’s an album that will reward you the more effort you put into it.
The videos from Karnivool’s acoustic album launch parties are magical - I’ve seen a couple on YouTube but there’s more on IG/Facebook
Man I'm obsessed with Karnivool's album. I'm trying not to let recency bias affect my reasoning but the more I listen to it the more I believe this is their best album. Glad I didn't spend any of the past 11 years watching live footage of the songs as well, though I probably will now. Curious to find out how much some changed from the initial performances to the final studio versions. I remember this was the case for "Aeons" in the lead up to Asymmetry.
Salva's solo made me emotional the first time I heard it, it's so bright and triumphant. Such a breathtaking way to close out the whole thing.
its my favorite album of theirs too but i didnt get sound awake when it came out, i only started listening to them about half a decade back, so part of it is definitely how special it feels to have like "my" karnivool album. never got to experience an album cycle of theirs and this was a hell of one to be the first
Apparently Conversations has been played for a long time, I need to find an old video of it. It really sounds like a song that has cooked for a looooong time, especially the way the chorus isn't played the same way twice.
Haven't found footage of it yet but it's wild that Animation, Reanimation and Aozora were already played live back in 2015/2016
One of the better new prog metal songs I’ve heard in a long time. FFO: VOLA, Good Tiger, The Contortionist
+1 for Karmanjakah. Had no idea they had new music on the way. Shout out Facebook not showing me shit from the pages I'm following.
Random DRAGONFORCE announce Alissa White-Gluz as new frontwoman, to make live debut at Welcome To Rockville
I really like the mix overall (drums / vocals / guitar volumes), and the guitar tone are uniquely crisp and clear. I hadn't heard of these guys until the lead up to this album. Glad to have found and I'll go back through their catalogue.
Karmanjakah album is out. I’m having to reorient myself a little though, the first time I listened I didn’t realize there were so many interludes, then when I got to the end I was like, “wait, what?” Trying to get a better feel for the “actual” songs. are there other bands doing a “pretty” implementation of thall? I don’t exactly have my ear to the ground with thall/djent-ish subgenres, but I’ve at least never heard it executed like this.
I haven’t found one like karmanjakah yet. Most thall right now is pretty heavy and not at all in major scale haha
Karmanjakah album is cool, but yeah, it is weird with the interludes and the fact that the first 3 songs I'd already heard. Based on that, it didn't quite hit as hard as it could of. Kind of wished it was an all new find on album day and I went in fresh. Some stand out songs and sections though and a very talented group.
I haven't listened yet, waiting until this evening to be able to focus on the album, but on prog albums in particular where the album format tends to be paid more attention to, it is very rare that I listen to more than the very first single. So, to that end, I've only heard Dove and am very excited to hear the rest tonight.
