Yeah the way the album abruptly stopped and with it being called “Prismer I”, I assume that a part two is on the way, kind of like the newest Night Verses album was released in two parts. It’s not my favorite thing in the world, but I understand bands have to be creative with release strategies to try and gain some traction.
Really been obsessed with this Psychonaut album this weekend/week. Strikes a really good balance of sounds and flows very nicely.
Textures also announced their new album, Genotype, to be released on January 23! Void At The Edge Of Winter Measuring The Heavens Nautical Dusk Vanishing Twin Closer To The Unknown A Seat For The Like-Minded Walls Of The Soul Phenotype's cancelled follow-up initially had that name, so my 2016 self is so happy to see them finally complete that decade old project. I do wonder if they reworked some of that pre-breakup material or started from scratch when they reunited.
Yep this was their comeback single! Going to revisit their discography. Forgot how hard the second half of that one goes... absolutely filthy
In case you need a spot to fill in your top 10 2025. I relistened when I was reviewing my lists for the year and was quite surprised how I didn't listen more during the year. Highly recommended to math/prog/post/prog-metal/rock lovers. Snooze - I Know How You Will Die
Going by some snippets, this sounds like it goes pretty hard. I hear shades of Exotic Animal Petting Zoo, And So I Watch You From Afar and Intronaut (especially vocally). Giving it a listen later!
Been down a KPop rabbit hole for the past month. Emerging to catch up on some recent prog metal singles/albums. First, Cold Night for Alligators. This sounds like when people describe Sleep Token as having djent/prog influence, but it's actually correct. Next is Arcane Roots. We got a thread here for them, but worth a post here as well. Good Tiger are back! continued in next post...
Port Noir are a recent Inside Out signee. I like the atmosphere they are bringing here. Djenty riffs, clean vocals, but a little black metal atmosphere and tremolo picking/blast beats sneak in. Sounds absolutely massive. Honestly, I'm not sure the logic of when Einar writes new Leprous songs or new solo songs. He's got a new solo album coming out. It sounds like Leprous. And last is Serval. From what I can tell this is a one-man project, which is crazy because it's so well produced and layered. Shades of BTBAM and The Ocean, and a host of other progmetal-adjacent bands.
Let me add onto that the new Hirsch Effekt, which sounds kind of like if Leprous were a post-hardcore band (and also sung in German).
Oh yeah this was on my list as well, but I forgot about it. Lot of good stuff coming out, new Karnivool next week as well!
Catching up on the only one of these that I haven't heard/wasn't on my radar. As a certified Sleep Token enjoyer, I don't think I'd put it in the same boat. Reminds me much more of the recent VOLA and Ihlo albums, with a more Patrick Stump-adjacent singer and a touch more whimsy. A bit more attention into the production and I think they have a winning formula - the guitars in particular are a little thin for the sound they're going for.
I guess this is the place to post this - here’s my interview with Ian and Drew from Karnivool! Karnivool Detail The Epic Grind Behind 'In Verses': 'Everyone’s Still Finding Really Beautiful Stuff On This Record' | The Music
incredible album, they really made something close to Sound Awake after all these years. so glad Asymmetry wasn't their last lmao
I know the Karnivool album is going to get a fuckton of attention, and there's basically no way it winds up outside of my top 10 for this year, but ... This needs to be checked out as well. Whole thing is out today and it reminds me of squashing BTBAM and Steven Wilson together. Really good stuff.
I’ll admit, I never “got” Karnivool, but this new album is really clicking for me. The production being as good as it is makes it easy to listen to though. Riffs are huge sounding, great sense of atmosphere, the rhythm section is insane, some of these bass tones are out of this world. You can tell this is a band honed in on their sound that they’ve been perfecting for a long time.
