This one is a real shitter. That solo on Purple Rain is simplicity at its best. The way all music should be.
Probably one of the best concerts I've ever seen, simply unparalleled musicianship throughout the whole thing. Can't really think of another that even comes close. I saw Prince the second night of like a 3 night stand at the United Center. The first show was horribly received because Prince didn't play guitar at all. Like, for the whole 3 hour performance he stuck to piano and whatnot. He got crushed in the reviews of the performance. Anyway, I remember doors opened at like 7, but they wouldn't let anyone take their seats because Prince was still rehearsing with the band, you could actually hear them running through cues, working introductions to perfection and all that. I think they continued to rehearse for an hour or so before anyone was let into the actual bowl. He delivered a simply scorching performance, brought out Jennifer Hudson (being Chicago the place went nuts) and basically went crazy. Glad I got to see "Purple Rain" performed live once in my lifetime.
Watch this! I can't believe this was allowed on TV in 1991. http://theconcourse.deadspin.com/pr...ource=deadspin_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow
Absolutely gutted. I only really got into his work in the last couple years, as I got more into R&B. He truly had a peerless discography.
I can't listen to "Sometimes It Snows In April" too many more times today or I'm just going to fall apart.
