Damn. My second listen isn't much better than the first. This loses my attention somewhere around the fourth song. I don't think this was the direction I really wanted them to go in... hopefully this grows on me in time. edit: this improves on the back half
I’m getting slight Algernon hints from a few vocal melodies here and there, which is a pleasant surprise. Overall I’m impressed with this. I can tell it’ll be my fall driving soundtrack, and I’ll appreciate it much more with familiarity.
I'm getting through my first listen right now. "Leopard's Paw" is one helluva song, but nothing else has set itself aside from the others.
a lot of people will probably like those vocals that listen to for a lack of better term "real emo" ha
i mean, i'm not familiar with any of those older emo bands/midwest emo/whatever the tag even is, i more just always thought in the grand scheme of this band's strengths and weaknesses, vocals were somewhere near the latter. not that they were bad or anything, just not necessarily a focal point. they way they've loosened up here gives it more personality and style as far as I'm concerned. the sloshy hi-hat style too pairs perfectly with the vocals on this record.
the drums on this fucking record, are you kidding me? the guitars rounded off some of their edges, the vocals are relaxed (it's sloppy, but it seems a lot more natural/seamless, for better or for worse), the drummer is chaotic and in the pocket, everyone's just together on a set of consistently urgent tracks. as far as i'm concerned, this is like immediately and obviously the band's most engaging release.
after I play the movielife album for the third time day I'm going to give this a serious listen again.
i should probably say i haven't listened to the prawn discography in a hot minute, but I don't remember anything sounding as varied or immediate as this does today.
I don't see this album taking over Kingfisher just bc I know my musical tastes and know that I prefer those slow burners, and slow burning moments on Kingfisher way too much.
Pleasantly surprised how much more bounce and groove this album has over Kingfisher. Really enjoying it!
So happy to see the positive reactions in here today ! I'm not ready to compare this to Kingfisher as a whole yet, but I do think there are a good 4-5 songs that are definite steps up from anything on there. Learning North Lynx on guitar has made me appreciate the instrumentation even more..gonna try to review this in a week maybe
