He got hired two or three years ago to revamp the franchise for film and television. As of now it’s all supposed to tie in together
A good, fun, colorful, semi-standalone Power Rangers film with any sort of (probably brief 'cause Netflix) theatrical run would rule.
How long is this special supposed to be? In the half hour to an hour range? Seems like the exact kind of nostalgic one-off with the right aesthetic for a childhood big fan (who’s out of touch with the lore) like me. Also… anything known about the production timeline, and what’s up with that Green Ranger?
Haven’t seen anything on length. From what I read awhile back, JDF was involved somehow, but not necessarily in front of a camera. It’s been a minute, so I may be wrong.
Looks very cheesy and like it has been ripped from the late 90s. Glad they embraced it. Can’t wait to watch it. This being a special sounds like a smart decision. I’ll love watching this for an hour, but probably not 3 or 4 hours.
Sorry for being a know it all but: Length is about 45 minutes. So essentially the length of three episodes. JDF had retired from Power Rangers and turned down an appearance but he did record some lines for the upcoming Master Morpher toy so there’s a chance he might’ve done some ADR for the special. Mostly this is Billy and Zack’s big moment
After raising $250,000 in less than 24 hours via a Kickstarter campaign for the “Power Rangers: A 30th Anniversary Comic Book Celebration,” Johnson will write a brand new “Power Rangers” comic book series with publisher Boom Studios, Variety can exclusively announce. As for why she didn’t join the anniversary miniseries. Speaking with Variety, Johnson reveals, “There were a bunch of different factors that came into play. One of them [being] I was working on other projects, and I also have a 14-year-old…I stopped acting and switched my focus to writing [and] directing almost 10 years ago. I can give you a list of excuses.” She adds, “It just didn’t even occur to me [to join the reunion] because I was so focused on this comic book and telling this story.” https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/amy-jo-johnson-power-rangers-comic-series-1235569122/
I'm watching the new Netflix show Beef and in the first episode there's a scene outside the command center from MMPR
Okay, while I got some enjoyment out of the special, it’s bad. I don’t think they decided who their target audience was. 90’s kids or current kids. Leads to very odd moments that feel out of place. The dialogue was ROUGH. Even for Power Rangers. Also, Rita calling them by last name just feels so weird. I like the core idea of the story. But it’s very clunky in execution. I found it odd that Billy was all “we don’t kill cause you never know” and then he shoved his lance through Rita’s chest. That’s also one of the “who is this for?” moments. I think the best part was the closing “opening credits.” Minus Rocky morphing. They fucked that up really badly somehow. Like they pasted his current head on his old body or something. Super weird.
I loved it. Tons of fun Easter eggs. It was nice to see Billy and Zack have some legitimate character development. Loved how present Thuy’s memory was through the whole thing
Yeah I enjoyed the special a lot. Nostalgia and all that. Also, I think Billy mentioned those monsters and Rita(?) had to be destroyed to get the captured rangers fully restored or something along those lines
This didn’t work for me more often than it did. I think half the funniest moments were unfortunately attempts at pathos? But, when it did work, it did very well. And, both what worked and what didn’t really got my brain’s gears turning on various thoughts, a lot more than I would’ve expected. Overall an… interesting pop culture object, imo.
Well, since I started up Netflix again to watch the special, now is probably as good a time as any to watch Dino Fury. It’s fine, so far. Pretty standard power Rangers fare. Maybe a little more kiddie than I’m used to, but not that much. The only thing that bothers me is the insanely long morph call. Like, there shouldn’t be different phases just to initiate morphing. Very weird choice.
Yeah it’s been that way for about a decade now, give or take. End of season two is really where Dino Fury is at its best
I guess so, yea. I’ve seen Samuria and Megaforce, like half of Dino Charge, and 3 episodes of Ninja Steel (first two eps and the crossover with all the old rangers). Oh and one Beast Morphers episode, the one with Jason. I feel like Dino Charger was a little less kiddie. But it is aimed at kids, so I’m not mad or anything haha I remember you telling me that. I wanted to watch it before Cosmic Fury. I want to check that out when it comes out. Which is tba fall?
Yup! I’ve heard August tossed around but who knows. First season of Dino Charge is top tier. Can’t remember if you’ve seen RPM but highly recommend that one as well
I expected the special to be heartfelt and have a hefty helping of nostalgia, and it succeeded on both counts. It was a really rewarding watch for me, and I hope we see Minh show up again down the line.
Felt exactly like the original show. I love that they didn't try to upgrade things like CGI or the costumes. Kept it perfectly cheesy
